Why is My Computer Shocking Me?

BLLDoesTech

I turned on my PC today and went to plug in a second monitor. That's when my PC shocked me, not a quick but continuous flow of electricity. I had to use a HDMI to VGA and when I plugged in the HDMI I touched the VGA adapter on accident and it shocked me as well.

Is this bad for my PC or should I just try not to touch it?

This seems to being caused due to static electricity which is usually not too dangerous for you although can cause damage if comes with the sensitive components inside of your case. Maybe use an anti-static wrist band before you touch the adapter?

Its not static because it was a continuous shock

Are you using a integrated system card for the converter or is it an external device which is giving the shock. If it is internal then the configuration of your system may be incorrect. Are you using a power strip or UPS unit or do you have your system plugged into the wall socket directly?

This could be the case if the adapter is an external one and needs three prongs or if the computer itself is connected to a wall socket which is not routed correctly for excess current which is the third prong on US type plugs which have a total of 3 prongs.

Most of the more modern UPS units and some of the high-end power strips can detect wiring faults in a circuit automatically and let you know, you could get one and see if there is a wiring fault present or maybe get an electrician to check out the circuit and then they would be able to provide you with some repair options in the case that there is a wiring fault detected. This may be very costly to repair or even diagnose so I would keep that in mind before you go out and call an electrician over to investigate the issue.

the easy fix: don't touch the connector then

the $5000 fix: call an electrician who will say you need to replace all of the wiring inside your house because it isn't grounded properly and/or is too old.

Was it the PC and not the Monitor??
I usually get that when I touch the Monitorcable or for example when i touch certain (metal) Area of a TV and an F-Connector.

That is why I earthed my TV over the F-Connector...

If that wasn't the case and you get (slightly) shocked when touching the case then you#re missing ground...

Alright found the problem. My neighbor came in and looked at everything when he noticed my PC was on carpet. He recommend I put down some boards and PC on top of those. And no shocks at all after that.

Because your power outlet isn't Earth grounded.

Your PC could be sitting on a wet floor and still not shock you.

Alright found the problem. My neighbor came in and looked at everything when he noticed my PC was on carpet. He recommend I put down some boards and PC on top of those. And no shocks at all after that.

That does not make sense.

Because your PC should be grounded.

That means that every piece of voltage gets discharged over the long, middle pin of the PSU Connector. And your Plug for the Wall should also have something there.

So while it might have done something about your issue its not the cause of that because you also have some small caps that might discharge a smal current towards the case...
