A few questions about home automation

I want to get into home automation, you know the whole locks and lights and security cameras. I have done a fair bit of reading and one thing I am seeing is that people start with one product, then another and eventually its all a mess of mishmash. Is there one central "hub" that I should start with and expand with that? My wife and I were thinking of going with the Nest products because of the ease of integration with various products. The main problem is in one of the LTT videos it is discussed that you have to pay in order to archive footage, which is not something I want to pay for. I guess what I am saying, is with all these products I am a bit lost and not sure where I should start throwing my money? As far as voice commands to activate things, I see google home and amazon echo are the standards. With the Google home does it have to be tied to an email account? For example, if it uses my account, will people in the house be able to say something like, "Read current emails" and have them read off? Or if my kids are trying to be funny and say "add to schedule, go to the park". I appreciate any feedback.

 

edit - I almost forgot the budget, I am starting with $500 USD. Will eventually add on more and more. Just not sure where to start.

Actually, other people would not have the ability to ask a Google home connected to your account to add things to your schedule, make phone calls, read emails, reference your virtual phone book as voice check would detect that it is not actually you and would block that person from being able to do that. You could have multiple accounts connected to the device and the device would use voice match to indicate which user is speaking and therefore would be able to add a given event to the correct speaker's account. I would recommend Loews Iris as for a home automation hub as I know that it is reliable and is able to link many different types of devices although it may have a slight variance based on the rest of the setup that you choose to go with. I would suggest building off from having a hub rather than the other way around as the devices you go with may not all be able to work on a single hub and having many different hubs for automation is not optimal.

The biggest issue I have with the smart home gadgets is the breach of privacy, and security, both thruogh the devices themselves,  and physically.

 

These companies sell you their products for X, and then collect all your personal info including private conversations, and sells it to 3rd parties.

be sure to read the terms of service prior to  just clicking agree.

the monthly fees to use your $100 cameras that you bought 5 of is really annoying.

So on top of buying the product, and them selling/collecting/storing forever, all your data,  you have to pay them for that 'privelege'?

 

Cant you just set up a self hosted website, with a user name and PWD so that you can log in via any device and veiw your cameras?

I am sure you've thought of this, but what's wrong with staying "Not smart" is voice commands and self locking doors or whatnot really that important to you that you want to take all the potential risks?

Ive had to do enough cybersecurity to know i wouldnt trust any of these consumer level home invasion... i mean automation gadgets.

See where you store your valuables. Get an idea of you and yours comings and goings. See if or when you get drunk or if you hit the casino on a regular basis. Patience pays off for the smart ones. The dumb ones just smash a window and hope for the best.

Yeah, I personally hate the idea of all this smart home crap, I think one guy said his refrigerator had a camera in there so he could check if he needed anything. . .

In some respects I'd like to have a cell phone link to my security camera's, but a well hidden hd pinhole camera system and several obvious cameras with a good quality home alarm is good. But I see the future and its the ability to see your child from your cell phone or your grand parents in the old age home from your cell phone, or your dog at the kennel or groomers. Especially with the min wage workers beating up in anger infirm people.

Those are all greqt things when done in the same spirit as IBM mainframe. The cheap IoT devices are not mission critical or safety critical in terms of their reliability engineering. 

 

If they were, id have electronic locks and stuff

it depends on the brand. im pretty sure with nest and ring you have to use the nest and rig app to view them

When we redid our house we went for ANSI Z97.1 1984 rated double pane(each pane is two panes of glass laminated with polyvinyl butyral in between so its really quad pane) windows.

 

They look just like normal sash windows with muntins but theyll stop a 400 foot pound impact.

We had like 14 windows replaced and it required a lot of custom woodworking. It was done in 2007 for probably $15,000 or something. At the time we were renovating everything: siding, vapor barrier, AC ductwork and system, installed a monitored alarm with smoke detectors in every room instead of the 3 or 4 the house had originally. Its kinda foggy exactly how much each thing cost tbh. The electric bill was almost cut in half afterward though. Insurance went down from all the security/hurricane resistance.

my neighbor just installed a 2" thick solid metal door with not one but three big ass locks (like those in bank vaults) the windows have double bulletproof glass and thick bars, different cameras monitor the door, windows and street, barbed wire fences over the walls, an alarm that's loud af and there are also 3 cameras on the roof pointing to my fucking house, for real I don't know what the fuck is going on in there but it's big
