So I have this old computer I'm going to fix up for my sister. All she needs to do is type stuff for school and maybe watch YouTube or something.

Specs:

Intel Pentium 4 @3.0GHz

2Gb RAM (1Gb x 2)

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (No HD Graphics here!)

Some open PCIE slots

And keep in mind this computer is from 1998.

So, fix or make a completely new one?

1998...?

The cpu you have and pci-e was released in 2004...

Anyway, I'd grab a ssd for the system and see if that is all it takes to spring new life into the system.

That CPU is definitely not that old. But you could get a lightweight Linux on there to make it feel more snappy.

Unless it's IDE, but sata cards do run pretty cheap these days.

My rig: 2600k(4.2 GHz) w/ Cooler Master hyper 212+, Gigabyte Z68-UD3H-B3, Powercolor 7870 xt(1100/1500) w/AIO mod,

8GB DDR3 1600, 120GB Kingston HyperX 3K SSD, 1TB Seagate, Antec earthwatts 430, NZXT H2

Verified max overclock, just for kicks: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2609399

Check his second link. It uses sata.

If you want to do any gaming, get a new machine. If you will be web browsing, put lightweight linux on it (lxde, xfce).

Sorry my bad. I didn't pay attention to it thinking it was someone else's post.
