Which GPU to buy in late 2018 (Japan Prices)

Zotac 1080 Amp = ¥65,000 ($580)

MSI 2070 Armor No OC Variant = ¥71,000 ($635)

Zotac 1080Ti Amp = ¥86,000 ($770)

 

Which do you think is a good buy? I'm currently playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Monster Hunter at 1080p. I do have a 4k TV hooked up to my PC but 1080p is enough for me because I prefer smoother game play rather than higher resolution.

In my opinion, the GTX 1080 AMP seems like the best choice from a pure value perspective with the 1080 Ti in second place. Going from 1080 to 1080 Ti, you experience a 43% increase in price for only 18% increase in performance at 1080p Ultra in AC: Odyssey. It's a better deal than the RTX 2070 though, especially since there's little real performance gain for the extra $100.

What I meant is the 2070 Armor NO OC Variant. There is also a 2070 armor with OC variant

I don't think a 1080 is a big enough jump over the 1060 to warrant the upgrade unless it's a cheap used 1070ti/1080, but if he has the money for a 1080ti he might as well go all the way, as it is more capable of 4k gaming

You're probably right on that, though in AC: Odyssey it's a pretty significant difference at Ultra 1080p (23.2 FPS vs 59.8 FPS average from TPU). I wonder what the used market in Japan is like though, because I'd bet you could find a 1080 Ti that is well taken care of for between the 1080 and 2070 prices (or at least around the 2070 price.)

I do have a friend who always upgrade his GPU with the TI versions and willing to sell his 1080Ti to me for ¥60,000 BUT he wants to wait for the price of the 2080Ti to drop around MSRP around ¥110,000 but right now the 2080Ti is ¥180,000

Bot the RTX card because that's 1080 performance with features no one knows whether this GPU can use it. Just like Hairworks on GTX 1060s: Supported, but frame rates are so bad you'll turn it off anyway.

 

Then the Zotac cards. Both got bad PCBs so overclocking is ill-advised (VRM temperature goes pretty high at stock). 1080ti can let you use higher settings for the meantime and last an extra year or two with that extra performance (let's say 4 years while 1080 is good for 3), so I choose the 1080ti.

How about Gigabyte 1080Ti OC? I just searched in Amazon JP and found that its cheaper than Zotac's offering ¥82,000 vs ¥86,000

I've heard that those Gigabyte cards run a bit loud and hot, but it's a little better price-wise. I'd consider waiting for your friend, though I don't think the price will drop that drastically any time soon.

I'm not much of an overclocker and i'm pretty sure  I have good airflow in my case (3 120 intake, 2 120 exhaust w/ mesh front) so will this card do?

I've been searching about the 1080 Armor OC but most of the time the search results are showing 1080Ti Armor saying it thermal throttles very quickly. Do you think the "Armor" cooler can provide decent cooling for the 1080? If not, is the Palit one good? I haven't tried any Palit GPUs so i'm not sure about longevity but it has higher boost clocks and it has dual bios.

Armor cooler's situation on the 1080 is slightly more bearable than that of the 1080ti, but you still need to undervolt the GPU manually and definitely not overclock to achieve that. In other words, it's worse than the Gigabyte or Zotac cards.

 

The Palit one is actually quite good. The thing is that it's a thick card, so make sure you don't have cards in its way. Palit brand itself has some history just like the others, just not as much fame. Even less than ELSA outside Japan, if you know what I mean.
