It's actually a common practice to reduce the sun exposure to large windows, reducing the amount of heat coming in the windows. 

 

Same exact idea of a pergola on a deck or patio.

can anyone tell me if these...

have no idea how to even google for what those are.

Without seeing architectural plans, I can't say for certain, but I would guess with 99.9% certainty that they are entirely aesthetic in purpose.

if you look where they end to the left, they just stop. if they were solar water heating, they would connect to something
