If you have the $$$ the 2080ti is the most powerful gaming GPU for the money.  I'd get that.

I should have specified that I want the best I can get at 1440p at max, 165hz Gsync. If I want to get the brand new Tomb Raider or BF game do I even need a better card?

I do have the money, and my relationship (wife of 20+ years) is used to me spending STUPID money on PC parts. So none of that is at risk. Basicaly, is a 2080ti overkill fot the resolution and refresh rate I run?

A if the card still serves you very well. If you don't NEED to upgrade, than don't.

B if you have the cash for it and it won't affect you in any way. Relationship, bills, credit cards, etc.

C if you want overall longevity and great usage.

D if want the specs of a 1080ti but with Ray Tracing

In simple terms it is overkill, but if you're ready to just slow down and play some games at 4k (you only have a 1440 atm) than a 2080ti would be perfect. Not worth the upgrade if you don't plan on upgrading your monitor as well.

That is the hard part, I don't necessarily want to go 4k but I would LOVE to get two more of these 1440p and do some surround gaming. I am currently running the 1440 and a single 1080 2nd monitor. I want to get away from 1080 totally on this system so I can migrate the 1080 monitor over to my Win 7 retro system. It is currently using a 720p TV as a monitor. I could, of course, just buy a new 1080p monitor but if a want an upgrade why wouldn't I upgrade my main system and let the win7 and win xp machines have the hand me downs?

Again, I am not looking for what "I" should do but what "you" would do.

Ok, than I'll say it this way. I would just go all out and buy a 2080ti and here's why.

New gen, will last for many years just as the 980ti has done for you so far.

Ray Tracing, you'll be the first to experience the process as it steadily grows and improves. Nvidia will also update drivers so your card doesn't become obsolete

You'll never have to upgrade again unless it's 5+ years down the line

Technology is so ahead and can only improve so much in such a small piece of hardware, so the 2080ti will be around for a LONG time

If you ever want a newer monitor, you'll never have to worry about your card being able to push out what you're buying.

Tons of benefits of a 2080ti so long as it causes no repercussions in your life.

Yeah, I think I agree, it is going to be a 2080ti and a couple more of my 1440p monitors. I might sell the 980ti. My win 7 system already has a 970 in it. My son has a 1070 and my xp system has a GTX 260...which I admit is stupidly fast for XP. Probably don't need to pass down parts this time.

My wife games at 1440p and new titles are forcing us to upgrade soon.

I, while I could afford a RTX 2080ti without getting a divorce or lose my house, would not (because I have children and differing goals)

But given the above coming upgrade for my wifes rig and having to turn BF1 to 1080p to get it to run smooth then:

I personally wouldn't waste money on something less than the RTX 2080ti because you will have many good years with that GPU regardless of the release debacles.  BUT I AM TEAM RED, so I would likely force myself to buy an RX 580 to stick it to the man, but that makes no sense for you with how decent your current GPU is compared to a 580.

If you have the money, get the 2080TI, but if you like to keep some money, go for the 2080, it doesn't perform better then pascal cards NOW, but if games start offloading things to the raytracing cores, then you will see a speed improvment and nicer graphics, and that while saving some money. But if you are like me and want the best, get a 2080TI.

(I have spent money on a Titan Xp, I'll probably buy a 2080TI once actual RTX games start rolling in and I have access to the SDK.

What are your monthly income and expense numbers as well as checking, savings, 401k, investment portfolio levels?

If I am going to be you and make this decision, those are all pertinent numbers I would need to know before I make the decision.  That said, I'm fiscally responsible.

D is wrong btw, it's 1080Ti not 1080.  But yes, I would do C without knowing much.

Your comment about your wife gaming at 1440p tells a lot.  Ask her what you should buy.
