Judge my new rig!

Hi everyone!  This will be my second build ever (and first time with Intel).

 

1. Budget & Location

I have about $1600 USD and I live in the US.  An extra $100 wouldn't break the bank though

2. Aim

I'm going to be using this mostly for gaming, but some video/photo editing on the side as well.  

3. Monitors

I have a 1080p monitor with a 75hz refresh rate and another 1080 ips monitor with 60 hz refresh rate.

 

 I know the 8700K is way overkill for the gtx 1060, but I'm planning on upgrading the graphics card later to a 2070 or something else in the future once I have more money.

the motherboard almost costs as much as the gpu so some balance issues are pretty prevalent

You can use your big drive as normal storage but you should get a second one and use it in raid 1. That will clone data and store it on the second drive. You can use windows backup to backup your SSD to the HDD.

I wouldn't suggest a 3gb card with an 8700K, maybe save money on the case with a phantecs p4-something, and get a semi modular 550w psu from corsair for around 60$, then used the saved money to upgrade the GPU to a 1070 or something

Ultimately it's your decision but the case, AIO cooler,  RAM, and $115!!! white PSU, in particular, are a bit over the top. For $1600USD you can get a GTX 1080 but if you'd rather get a 2080 later down the road then that's up to you. But here is a similar spec build with some changes for the same price only with a 1080. It's your choice to get those items but when it comes down to it, RGB RAM, a white PSU, and super nice case won't give you better system performance. I could sacrifice even more and fit a 1080Ti in your budget.

Yes

The machine costs 1600$ and has a budget gpu due to budget imbalance. When you overspend on things that effect the performance zero and underspend on things the machine actually needs to be fast then that'll be a big issue for the final product.

I would Highly recommend it. Having a different drive could make problems. Have you built this PC yet? When setting up raid you will be forced to clear all data on the matching drives.

I'd change at least the GPU and PSU out. Get something around 750-850W if you're spending that much. I suggest the EVGA G2/G3 series.

 

Swap out the 3GB 1060 for a 6GB 1060. You'll get some extra performance along with the extra 3GB of VRAM.

 

I'd personally go with a cheaper case with a budget like that, but that's up to you. You could go with a better GPU than a 1060 if you did get a cheaper case.

Actually I didn't even realize that it was showing the 3GB version on pc partpicker.  I've edited it now to show the 6GB card I was looking to get.

I actually like the changes you've suggested!  I might not stick with the case you've suggested but making room in the budget for the 1080 sounds like a great idea!

I haven't built the PC yet, but I'll look to get another HDD.

Change the case if you want, I agree, I just wanted to show you that for $1600USD you can build a far more powerful system. You don't have to sacrifice all the good stuff but when expensive cases, RGB, cooling, etc take away from real performance then I think it makes no sense. You can get RGB RAM and fancy case fans later on if you want. And if you want nice cables then get cable extensions. All this can be done without really changing much to the base of your build. I would never cheap out on a CPU, motherboard, GPU, or PSU (within reason).

This is the new build with the great advice I got from everyone.  My only questions would be if the cooler would be sufficient for the 8700K and if there's any other glaring issues?

Yes, but the person that was suggesting a build had a WD Blue SSD in instead of the 860 Evo.

Don't get a Barracuda 3TB, the failure rates on them are very high. Get a 2TB or 4TB drive instead.

That looks ok. You could wait a week for the 9th gen Intel CPUs to come out and see if the 9700k is a bit better and grab a Z390 board.

Okay!  I think a 2TB HDD with the 500GB SSD should be plenty.

I'm most likely going to be waiting for holiday sales to get the PC.  In terms of a Z390 board do you have any advice on picking a board?

It's hard to say because they're not out yet . Based on what I know so far from them though VRM wise at least most of them that are $150+ should be totally ok.

RAID 1 is not backup. If backup is desired get a 3TB - 4TB external hdd and do regular backups to it.

 

Should wait until the reviews are out sometime next week, but I suspect the i7-9700K will outperform the i7-8700K in gaming especially.

I actually suggested the H5 because I use it to cool my i7-8700k I have it OC @ 5.0GHz and get pretty decent thermals actually. Alternatively, you could get the R1 universal, it is better than most 280mm AIO coolers, it's cheaper, super easy to install considering it's size, doesn't interfere with tall RAM, and it would look great with the white case. I didn't originally suggest it because it did not fit in the case I had chosen for the part list. But it will in the one you have chosen.

Generally look at the TDP ratings and make sure the cooler can handle above this, having them equal will work, but you might find overclocking hard to do (if your going to do that)
