Any full disk file transfer methods or software?

Go to solution Solved by 2theMAX,

i did it now all i need to do is correct the disk letters and boot from it

I need to transfer, file for file, all the files from a 250GB booted drive to different 500GB drive wo/ cloning the drive, cause just splits the drive in 2, or through the use of a FREE, TRUSTED, software that DOES NOT EXCLUDE ANY SPECIFIC FILES OR FOLDERS ESPECIALLY OS CRITICAL FILES. I've tried using Acronis but that excludes files.

Wait a moment. Cloning software don't split drive. You may use Macrium Reflect and clone (or image and then restore) from smaller to bigger with partition resize, so you'll have full drive used and partition will be extended automatically.

If you want to be sure that everything will be copied proper without any interruption, you can use rescue USB (created by Macrium Reflect) and boot from USB, then copy everything on second drive while system is offline.

And even if you do something wrong and your new drive will end with partition 250GB instead of 500GB, you may extend that partition using Minitool Partition Wizard without reinstalling system. It takes few seconds.

Here I helped one guy: link. He uses second computer for cloning (what I recommend if you have that option, it's easier that way), but method is similar using bootable USB.

normally when cloning it creates a partition from half the drive that if extended to the other half, cannot be booted from. and i dont have any USB's atm

So do it without. It's just for extra safety, because Macrium Reflect can clone working system using VSS service that allows that. I don't recommend that as "insurance policy", but people using it that way. And you'll have no problems with booting after cloning with resized partition or not. Just try.

BTW. I don't like Acronis too. :) I remember that I tested this program and don't really want to use it again.

is it free and does the software exclude any files?

What are you trying to achieve exactly? Are you simply trying to clone one drive to another by using another PC or are you trying to clone the OS on the machine you are using?

If it is the later, then you cannot just copy files. You need to clone the drive. You can use something like Clonezilla, Minipartition wizard or Mercurium Reflect.

I don't know of any cloning software that creates 2 partitions unless you already have 2 partitions on your drive. Do you have a recovery partition or something on your drive? If you do, you can just remove it then clone the drive and expand the partition. Or just clone it, delete the recovery partition and expand afterward.

Mind posting a screenshot of what your primary drive looks like? Your description vs what you are asking is a little vague and unclear.

NO CLONING, THAT SPLITS PARTITIONS IN 2, NO RECOVERY DRIVES OR PARTITIONS, NO EXPANDING. ERASE THE WORDS PARTITION, CLONE, USB, AND RECOVERY FROM UR VOCAB

Just clone the drive dude. Use Minipartition wizard and follow the wizard for cloning step by step. If you are booted off the drive you can use the software to clone the drive  and it will reboot the machine, continue the clone then it will resize the drive appropriately and reboot again. Then you just swap the drives out, setup your boot order and you're off to the races. You could also use Macrium Reflect. It will do the same thing. Straightforward and easy.

You cannot copy and past the contents of the drive and expect it to boot. You have the MBR, various hidden files and some other things in a hiddend partition that are all linked together.

Both pieces of software are free and trusted. I myself have used minipartition wizard more times than I count. Same for Macrium. Both are highly recommended across multiple communities and within the computer repair industry itself.

Hey, I wrote everything you need to know and even give you a link. Just try instead of asking another 100 questions.

If i use a different computer to move windows OS files from 1 drive to another, will it stop me when i reach the critical bits.

it denies me from doing it while booted from the drive, if i use a different computer running its own drive on its own files. will i be able to copy the files wo/ being denied by the system.

I can't understand why you just don't try what I wrote and clone your system using Macrium Reflect? All answers I already wrote, everyone else too.

You want to clone your system, so clone it. What "critical bits" you're talking about? Your system will work and after not so long time you'll get answers to all your quiestions.

You may, using Macrium Reflect:

1. Clone your drive using another computer (like guy who I helped and give you a link)

2. Clone your drive using bootable USB (Rescue media - created using Macrium Reflect from inside program).

3. Clone your drive using the same computer without bootable USB if you have no access to second computer and have no usb drvie of any kind (I assume that you living in some kind of wilderness without even one computer store in 100 km radius).

Really - good luck, do it and limit number of questions that you already get answer.

i just need to take the files and OS from 1 HDD to another HDD that's 2X as big WO/ CLONING OR USE OF A SOFTWARE THAT EXCLUDES ANY FILES ex. Acronis

That has to be done using cloning, period, as you cannot copy/paste an OS, because you need to transfer more than what you can see in file explorer (more than hidden files will show).

Have you tried to clone with EaseUS, it is very reliable: https://www.easeus.com/backup-utility/copy-and-clone-hard-drive.html
