Hello everyone,

I've been loyal to my motherboard/cpu combo for the past few years. Although I feel like the hardware can still keep up with today's software and games, I'm starting to worry that my next graphics card upgrade might not perform as expected due to an outdated platform. I have no idea what optimal hardware configurations are so I'd like to ask you guys.

Current Setup:

Board: MSI Z77A-G45

CPU   : Intel Core i7 2700K

PSU   Corsair RM550x (550W)

GPU   : XFX R9 280x

RAM  Kingston HyperX DDR3-1866 (2x8GB)

For the GPU upgrade I got my hands on a Gigabyte GTX1080. Will this graphics card perform as expected or should I upgrade other parts aswell?

Thanks in advance,

Twan

yes and no, yes it will probably bottleneck bot not severely...
but you will always see faster performance by going with a faster cpu.

its not a bad combo but i would highly reccomend upgrading the cpu aswell if possible, afterwards or directly

Current build: Ryzen 7 1700x, asus prime x370-pro, 16gb gskill trident z rgb, asus rog strix gtx 1070 ti, corsair rm650x, nzxt s340 elite, samsung 840 pro 256gb, 1.5tb hdd.

You should be fine. If there is a bottleneck it would be in certain games and won't be big enough to worry about. It's not like getting the 1080 won't give you better performance than like a 1070 so it's a good combo. If you want to get the 1080 i would just go for it.

I have i7 4770 and got the Gigabyte 1080Ti. Plays GTAV smoothly on Ultra settings and 2880x1620.

You can test your setup if it gets bottlenecked or not but if you play games that relies heavily on graphics, so the GPU, then it should be no problem. Just crank the resolution to 1440 or 1620p. It also depends on which games you play. Ubisoft are known to be lazy motherfuckers so don't be surprised if their games runs like shit on that setup.

If it gets bottlenecked, then it's best to buy second-hand CPU and mobo because the prices have been increased way too damn high and due to absurd prices of the DRR4 RAM, it's best to go for 4th gen.
