updating my LGA 775 rig

jinscho

First and foremost, I know the LGA 775 socket is outdated and I do have plans on building a 100% dedicated gaming rig in the future (have to convince my wife that a $2000 custom rig is 'necessary').  That being said, I'm doing some minor quality of life upgrades to my current rig to breathe some life back into it.  I was hoping to get some suggestions on "affordable" GPU's, something that will run WoW:MoP at higher settings that won't break the bank.

Here's my current set-up:

EVGA nForce 750I SLI motherboard

Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 OC'd to 2.4Ghz (working on picking up a Q6600 that will be bumped up to at least 3.0Ghz, whenever the ebay gods decide to let me get the last bid)

3x 2GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2-6400

PNY Geforce 9500GT 512MB

Logisys 575w SLI ready PSU

Win 7 home premium 64bit

Now, would it be worth it to invest in a higher end graphics card, or should I look into picking up another 9500GT and running them in SLI?

Any advice would be great!

Thanks!

lol 9500gt sli lolololol.

get a 7750, that would kill both of them.

Edit: actually, dont get a 7750, just get whatever is in your price range.

A Q6600 is a good upgrade. I would recommend a new psu as well because your current Logisys is going to explode without warning. A used GTX 460/470 would increase performance quite significantly.

Get a newer graphics card. Just make sure your PSU is fine and your motherboard. It will be a significant upgrade and when you build you dedicated rig just swap in the new GPU.

just so you know, you can get something like a 260X and not really be bottle necked in terms of the CPU slowing down the GPU  with a Q6600.

I ran a GTX 590 off a Q8200 at stock for a good year and was fairly good. If you can get a 790I mobo on ebay at DDR3 ram as well, this will allow you to keep the DDR3 ram now and buy everything else for a new system later.

2 years later and it hasn't blown up yet! I'll definitely look into the 460's/470's.

well.. it's more of "how much can I spend before the wife notice's all these deliveries".. rofl.  I'm probably going to cut myself off at ~$120, simply because I already have my next build priced out...

I probably wouldn't recommend that Raidmax psu, and in addition to that I would recommend going with the LGA2011 platform over LGA1150. In the mean time, I would recommend buying the SSD right now.

No thanks to a 1200W OCZ psu that couldn't handle 3 way SLI 465s

Finished my shopping for the day, picked up a Q6600 and an EVGA GeForce GTX 550 TI.  I'll update the thread once I have everything up and running and let you know how it goes!

Stay far, far away from Raidmax psus.

As for gaming, you're spending much more than you need to for the performance it delivers. There's also no point to getting Windows 8 Pro over the regular version and you should be looking into getting a nice IPS panel instead.

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

YAY LGA 775!

My PC is similar to yours and I have done some updating myself on this platform.

The Q6600 and 550ti is definitely a nice pair of upgrades, I wish I had a C2Q.

AMD will have better more relevant options than Nvidia (7000 series not 400 or 500 series) 7850 or 7770 are great choices to hold you over. Just a side not that you should atleast try and somehow (through voltages or unlocking cores whatever) catch the 9500GT on fire (fry it) and post it on the forum. If youre not going to use it again. I would like that :)

Didn't really do enough research into Raidmax apparently.  I'll have to re-evaluate that list, honestly I'll probably end up with a Corsair PSU.  As for Windows 8 Pro (was only shown as a $50 price difference) and the monitor, I'm not 100% sold on either of them yet and I'm open to suggestions.

Unfortunately I'm partial to Nvidia.  However, I have been very tempted to up the clock speeds drastically on the 9500gt.  From what I've read, they're a durable card.... Deliveries on the new parts should be here Thursday  ;)
