its science,

you let your computer make all the stuff so not real fun.

well, not really,

no.

run your computer to calculate the folding of protein as part of a huge network.

not really "fun", not really hard and no, you don't make any money.

You won`t make money off it. Competition on the scoreboards is always fun if you're into it, and it's not really that hard. As for what it is, there are literally hundreds of threads in this subforum asking the same thing. A quick look through the Folding FAQ will quickly give you your answer, so if you have time I suggest a read through it.

Direct from the Stanford website:

Help Stanford University scientists studying Alzheimer's, Huntington's, Parkinson's, and many cancers by simply running a piece of software on your computer.

The problems we are trying to solve require so many calculations, we ask people to donate their unused computer power to crunch some of the numbers.

sure it does. your computer simulates protein folding so we can understand better whats going on in this process. then "we" might figure out why they are folding wrong (lettin in diseases) so "we" can find cures.

aha so if i fold my computer can find answers to kill cancer?

You are using your excess computing power to fold proteins and run simulations, the results from which will be repeated thousands of times globally and verified with the professors at Stanford over thousands of unique projects in various fields; so in short, yes. Folding@home is not limited to only cancer research, so please keep that in mind. Distributed computing is a very powerful thing (ex. the many subdivisions of BOINC)

Folding at home is a program you run on your computer that folds proteins with your processor. Folding these proteins helps researchers to find cures for diseases. You won't make any money from it, but it's a nice feeling to do something that could possibly save someone's life. It's not hard because all you need to do is run a program on your computer and it will do the rest. I find it to be a bit fun because you can join a team (like the LinusTechTips team) and compete to see who can contribute the most. YOu don't actually do anything other than click a button to get it started though, so it might not be as fun for you. I hope this response is detailed enough.  :)

i will proceed to be as lazy as the op was, so i copied an older comment of mine about folding.

there is no direct reward as in money or anything similar and that's because.. science! it's great and you should help them out, the more we know the better.

a project like this helps them do things they would otherwise be incapable of doing, financing it themselves would cost millions upon millions of dollars, so instead we are here to give them a helping hand, we are basicly lending them our computational resources to do science stuff.
