New router cant connect to internet

Hi

 

Just trying to setup my Asus rt ac88u but its unable to connect to the internet.

 

I've connected it to my modem but still no luck. The internet works on my modem.

 

Please help.

Did you login to the router settings to see if it reported any issue?

 

Pro tip: never buy Asus routers... ever..

Did you connect the router via the wan port to the modem? did you use the setup wizard in the router to tell it needs to be on dhcp?

Is your modem just a modem and a new router would take time to get a valid ip from your ISP?

 

Questions questions questions... if only there was some more info to work with

Depends on the settings, if the Router has DHCP on then the cable should be connected to the designated internet/wan port on the device.

Also it could be that the range on you modem is different than what your router creates, this could also hinder your internet connection.

 

you can:

-set your Modem to Bridge mode and let your Router provide the IP addresses.

-Disable DHCP on your router and test it this way, ( note that the Internet/Wan port should not be used then)

How about answering the rest of the questions. What model is the modem. How is the router connected to it. And did you use the wizard in the router to set it up and if so how?

DHCP is a function that assigns a IP number to every device so it knows which device asks what.

you'll have to login into your device using the settings on the back

modem = huawei Hg659

Router= asus RT AC3100 88u

I went through the basic setup wizard.

It mainly just said to specify my ssid and my PPoE id.

ok found a setting called "enable vpn + DHCP connection " which is set to yes.

 

Should i disable it because Im not running a vpn.

What sort of connection do you have like fibre etc?

You might need to have it setup with Vlan tagging depends on what your ISP needs for the internet to connect.

The important question here we still need to know is if your "modem" is acting simply as a modem, or is it configured as a router?  I'd suspect the latter.

 

Were you previously plugging your PC directly into the modem?  Have you logged into the modem to see what it says in there?

 

If the modem is in router mode then generally you don't want to be using an extra router also in router mode, you want the modem in bridge mode or to use the router just as a WiFi Access Point and network switch.
