Internet switch making my minecraft server complicated

Go to solution Solved by Tedstonegenious,

Actually, my brother is an IT. he looked at it and he thinks it's because my ISP is giving me a dynamic IP address. So the server is now running on his old rig at his house. Thanks for all the help you gave me. I learned a lot/.

Jes, I am using java edition. the server also works as long as the other computer is locally connected.

Well then its a config issue of some kind. I didnt see it mentioned, but are you using a standard modem or a gateway? If its a gateway is it in bridge mode? If not that is your problem.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I found a setting called bridge mode on my router. long story short I had to factory reset the thing. so........ THANKS!

I used to have realms. But I no longer have the money for it.

If you want you can hit me up, I have a dedicated server idling away in a datacenter, I'd be happy to host your minecraft server for you

75% of what I say is sarcastic

So is the rest probably

So what is the difference between a modem and a gateway? How can I tell which one I have?

A gateway is a modem and router built in to one. If your box that connects your satellite to your network has multiple lan ports and or has WiFI its a gateway.

So now what do I do? turning on bridge mode just bricked my internet. I ended up having to factory reset the router to get the network working.

Well thats the issue. If you have a gateway then using a router is not going to work well. You need to set the router as an access point and put all the firewall settings in the gateway. The gateway is the only device on the network you want doing NAT, Firewall and DHCP server. Other wise your going to have issues. Because essentially a gateway is also a router, so hooking a router to a router means double firewalls and double NAT. This makes it a bitch if you want to port forward.

The fact is I dont have a Netgear router. Every router is different. You first have to figure out how to configure the gateway if you have one which Im guessing you do. Look for options that say AP mode in the Netgear and for the gateway I dont know what you have to even begin to tell you how to configure.

Also have you verified your ISP's speed? Satellite internet has not only slow speeds but a shit ton of latency. I mean your packets have to go in to orbit before they reach the internet. You might find you dont have a good enough connection to even run the server. Not without tons of issues.

I didn't read anything confirming if you have a gateway or a modem. Is your network setup is modem/gateway -> router -> computer? If that is the case you would want to set your gateway to bridge mode so that your router is the one doing all the NAT, firewall etc and not the gateway. If you have a modem then you don't need to worry about bridge mode.

This is whats connecting me to the internet. I also took a picture of the information if that helps, but I do not know if it's safe to upload that yet,

OK, what does the connect in to? My guess is that line is Coax and is carrying an RF signal, which means you have to have a box that converts that in to an Ethernet signal. That box is the modem or it could be a gateway.

Is this the box you are talking about. The black cable goes directly to the access point in the last picture.

I can't find any information about your service provider blocking ports (Assuming I am looking at the right one). From what I can tell about your set up so far port forwarding on your router should work. Is it possible for you to bypass your router temporarily and connect your computer where your router would normally be?
