Internet switch making my minecraft server complicated

Go to solution Solved by Tedstonegenious,

Actually, my brother is an IT. he looked at it and he thinks it's because my ISP is giving me a dynamic IP address. So the server is now running on his old rig at his house. Thanks for all the help you gave me. I learned a lot/.

I have a Minecraft server for me and my sister. it works when my sister'computer is connected to our network, but now she lives with my brother and cannot connect. I have forwarded port 25565 to my computer, but some reading on the internet hints that my unmanaged network switch between my computer and the router is making things complicated. The switch exists so that both my computer and dads old desktop (now connected to the living room tv) can be wired at the same time. Without getting two long ethernet cables. it is possible to wire it without the switch, however. Is this the only method I have for getting it to work. or is there a way for me to get the server to work without buying a 100 ft ethernet cable for my computer.

An unmanaged switch is just a bump in the wire basically, it doesn't do anything but move packets and doesn't add anything to the network but additional ports. Are you sure you port forwarded correctly and the server is running on that port?

when I go to https://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ it shows that the port is closed. So I know that that is some of the problem, this is my current port forwardign config.

Just to make sure, 192.168.1.12 is the current IP of your computer? I assume you statically set that?

yes 192.168.1.12 is the correct IP address

Next step would be to disable Windows Firewall completely and test, if the port shows as open then you know the firewall is blocking it.

Just make sure that the Minecraft server is running when you test, otherwise nothing is going to respond so it won't show as open.

It still shows the port as closed. And the server is online.

With the firewall disabled on all three profiles?

Any AV software with a firewall installed that you can disable for a second?

what are the three profiles? I just have windows firewall and I disabled that.

If you put in "Windows Defender Firewall" it should come up with "Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security"

Go to Windows Defender Firewall properties

You'll have a window with "Domain Profile" "Private Profile" and "Public Profile", set all three to off

All three are off now and i am still getting no port. can the port be closed at the ISP, and if so, what can I change it to.

If it's closed on the ISP side you could try a different external port and keep the same internal port.

Any idea what I could change it to. I have an article about registered ports up, and there are a LOT of them. wouldn't want to interfere with something

55555

Anything between 49152 and 65000-ish is fine.

I have it like this now.

and it is still not working.

Flip it, 25565 needs to be inside, 55555 is outside

I know this may not be what your looking for, but I would seriously consider buying a hosted server, especially if you are not experienced with networking, it only costs like $10/month, and its always online, you dont have to worry about networking.

besides, there is no greater teacher than experience. right?

I do have another question for you, just because I havent seen it anywhere, what does the IP that you are giving her look like?

(with x being a number)

Does it look like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

or

xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx

Just a note, please do NOT post your IP here, im just wondering about the format of it?
