Unexpected FPS

When I'm playing BF1, my FPS sits around 40. I'm playing at 1360x768 on ultra settings with an overclocked ASUS ROG Strix 1070 ti. My Intel i5-4440 usage is at 100% the whole time I'm in a match and the FPS drops regularly to 25-35 when I'm around a lot of fighting. Even if I play on low settings, I get around 40 FPS with no improvement in the drops. What's happening?

You are being bottlenecked by your CPU.

That's what I was thinking, but I don't really have $700 to buy a motherboard, CPU, and RAM.

get a new cpu. a 4690k or i7-4xxx should be better or upgrade to coffee lake/ryzen.

a new i5-4690k is about 150$. a 4790k is about 200$.

turn up your resolution.

if you wanna upgrade for less money see if any stores nearby or that you use online has used parts, or check something like craigslist (depending on where you're from)

Why would changing the resolution help?

at higher resolutions, more load is placed on the GPU. you will get the same fps, but mabye at 1080p.

It is not that it would help it's just that since your limitation is the CPU, not the GPU, increasing the resolution would only increase work on the GPU which has headroom meaning your fps is likely to remain the same either ways.

BF1 on multiplayer is one of the most CPU intensive games out there right now, it does drops 4c/4t CPUs to their knees and yours being a locked entry level 4th gen i5 certainly doesn't happen.

BF1 required a minimum of an i5-6600K or FX6350. I'm thinking fo just getting an 8700K or waiting until the next tick.

imo 8600k is better value for gaming.

Try type render.drawscreeninfo 1 in console and check how many threads the game set it to use by default.
