GTX 1060: A good choice is 2018?

ChiefMaverick

Hey guys, I know I had opened a similar thread 2-3 days ago regarding whether I should go with a GTX 1060 or a GTX 1070 and I was advised to go with an RX 580/GTX 1060 for 1080p gaming. And the past few days I have done my research and though about this a lot. If I do buy a PC this year, I won't be upgrading it for at least another 5 years. Now I just wanna talk about future-proofing because this is a big thing for me as I want my GPU to hold out and play games on epic settings for as long as possible. So in terms on future-proofing, I can't decide between a 1070 and a 1060 and so I need some advise regarding the same.

This is my current build so far: https://in.pcpartpicker.com/list/9BcwD2

Thank you for your time

If you can afford it and can use a GTX 1070 to its full potential, it's a no-brainer. Otherwise go for a GTX 1060.

As a GTX 1060 owner, I chose it over the 1050 Ti and 1070 since I knew that:
a) A GTX 1050 Ti would be far too weak for high settings in games I play - Overwatch, Fallout, CSGO, Rocket League etc.
b) A GTX 1070 would be way overkill for what I play and the respective graphical settings, and also the price

If you have the money, I would go with the 1070, but there wont be that much of a difference between the two in 5 years. Also, it all depends on what games you play; if you're gonna play big titles like BFV and such, get the 1070, if not stick with the 1060 which is cheaper

Yeah, that's also another one of my issues. I'm gonna play games like Fortnite, PUBG, CSGO, TF2 and idk any other game I happen to like which at this point I honestly don't know which ones. So I have no idea what will use a 1070 to the fullest and what won't, but one thing is for sure, I won't be going 4K anytime soon.

1060 is definitely cheaper, but at this point I just wanna keep pricing aside because if I just buy a 1060 now cause it's cheap and 5 years down the line it can barely run one or two games, that'll make no sense and It'll just be a regret that I didn't buy a 1070 back then.

If you think you're going to be playing highly graphically-demanding games in the future such as Fallout 76, then the 1070 is a safe bet.

It's worth investing more into your graphics card if you feel like you're going to eventually go ham on gaming with games that need that much power, it also gives you a safe framerate with the added performance from the 1070.

Upgrading your GPU every 5 years is kind of a standard thing.  If not sooner.  If you kept the 1070 for 5 years, I'd be surprised even.

Get a 1060 6GB card and just know you'll upgrade in 5 years.  Accept it, move on.

Yeah I might just stick with 1070 because at this point, the Zotac GTX 1070 Mini costs the same in India as in USA on Amazon, which is sort of a good thing because stuff is always so expensive. Also do you think a Ryzen 5 2600X will be sufficient, though at this point I can't afford anything more.

So you're telling me a 1070 won't even last 5 years, much less a 1060? So I just should buy a 1060 and upgrade later. That would be cool but then I'd have to well, upgrade everything starting from my CPU cause it's been 5 years lol

You might as well go 1070 at this point after all this discussion, you did say you said this graphics card would last you the next five years, so the 1070 is definitely more appropriate.

The Ryzen 5 2600X is an excellent CPU paired with a GTX 1060/1070.

I didn't say it wouldn't last 5 years. I'm saying you'll most likely upgrade for new features and more horsepower.  Like a car, they'll last 40-50 years, but why do people lease for 3?

You'll get the itch for more power, more speed, more whatever. ;)

Yeah you're right. But in theory a 1060 wouldn't do too bad either but not as good as a 1070, so I think 1070 would be the most appropriate choice as you rightly said.

Yeah obviously I'll crave for more but that's besides the point lol. I used my last laptop for 5 years until it literally died (The fans stopped working and the hard drive gave in and it was easier to replace than repair) so yeah, if I'm spending around a $1000 if not more, I better use it for 5 years at least or else it's simply not worth the trouble of building a gaming PC with good specs if they won't last you.

A 1060 is a 1080p 60hz card. If you think that you will go 1440 60hz or 1080 144hz in the near future go with a 1070.

Modern games seem to use more vram so the 6 gb version is the way to go.

There is really no future proofing when it comes to GPUs.

Back in 2011 I bought a GTX 570 to go with my i7 2600k build. I used the i7 2600k up until the beginning of this year. In that time it used a GTX 670, GTX 680 4gb, GTX 970, GTX 980, GTX 980 ti & a GTX 1080. The last 2 cards were bought because I went with higher resolution monitor. If I had stayed at 1080p 60hz I would still me using the GTX 980.

A GTX 1060 6gb is a safe bet for 1080p 60hz gaming until features like ray tracing become the norm.

Yeah but then again I won't be upgrading for 5 years. So if I just keep the same GPU for 5 years (no 4K gaming), is the 1060 6gb a better bet than a 1070 or the other way around?

For 5 years, if you're solid on that, get the 1070.  You'll keep settings higher longer.

Yeah online prices of 1070 match with US online prices. I'm expecting offline prices to treat me better.

Game development is mainly on consoles so for a PC system to stay ahead depends on the next console release specs.

The type of performance that the two cards you are compering are already old.

The GTX 1060 = a GTX 980. So the kind of performance you get from a 1060 has already been around for 3 years.

The GTX 1070 = a GTX 980 ti. That kind of performance has been around for about 3 years as well.

The GTX 1080s performance is 2 years old & The GTX 1080 tis performance is about a year old.

All of them will last 5 years. None of them will be relevant.

What I do is rank video cards with monitors.

GTX 1060 = 1080 60hz

GTX 1070 = 1080 144hz, 1440 60 hz.

GTX 1080 = 1440 WS 60hz

GTX 1080 ti = 1440 144hz, 1440 WS 100hz, 4k 60hz.

Look at the specs of the monitor you plan to use for the next 5 years & pick a card that can run it.

This makes sense, I will be buying a 144Hz display so I guess a 1070 is good enough

This maybe? Tell me if you need links of the parts

The GTX 1070 is from NVIDIA's website

Where do you live in india?

I live in Karnataka. I know Founders Edition is cheaper but I don't wanna buy it cause it's blower style instead of fan and makes more noise and is more hot. Yeah send me links of both storage devices, motherboard, case and RAM. Also I'll be used Ryzen 5 2600X and B450 motherboard. This is my part list https://in.pcpartpicker.com/list/QJDYfH I guess I could cut down some more, so please send me the links

Thanks a lot
