Alright so I have a pretty old system with an Intel i7-2600,and a GTX 980 and im looking to upgrade my parts bit by bit. And I'm curious if z370 Motherboards would be compatible with my cpu. Should i just upgrade my cpu and wait or what? Please recommend what i should do, thanks.

Nope, you'll need the correct socket for your chip, IIRC it's LGA1155.

Yep, it's 1155, so you'll need an X or Z series mobo with that socket. Unless you're seeing FPS drops though, an i7 2600 and 980 should be darn good. My 980 Ti still kicks serious butt at 1080p and even a 970 can keep up with a 1060 in most games. I still upgraded to a 1080 on my main rig tho, XD.

Welcome to the LTT forums! No your CPU will not be compatible with newer MOBOs, Intel changes their pin count and orientation every other generation, and they just did that so, you will need an 8 gen processor (or a most likely an upcoming 9th gen) if you want a CPU that will fit that MOBO.

To upgrade your CPU you need a new motherboard, and while the 980 is still a decent card, even the lower end Ryzen 3 1200 is a little faster than the i7-2600. To move up to more recent Intel or Ryzen processors you will need a new motherboard, DDR4 RAM, and of course the new CPU. You could however look into buying used Intel 4th gen, as there are some good processors from that time.

Okay with that said, i DO however, have 16gb (4x4) ddr4 corsair vengeance ram, and its 2600MHz, theres no need to upgrade to upgrade to 3000MHz unless i just want some overkill build right?

Yeah, if you already have DDR4 RAM I would just use that, though Ryzen does like faster RAM, its not enough to warrant out buying a whole new set of RAM.

Also im curious, are you recommending ryzen because of its afforadability? If not what are some other points of buying it? Cause im open to getting other intel chips

Honestly, if your i7 + 980 is keeping up with all the games you want to play at the detail you want to play at, then there's not really a reason to upgrade. Funnel the money into something else (nicer monitor? VR kit? Beer? Overclocking parts?)

Take a look at Gamers Nexus (I think it was them), as they did an analysis of i7-2600K vs newer chips and the differences were solidly in the negligible-for-most-people category.

Hardware Canucks did something similar but with a 1080 ti:

RandomGamingHD also did an i7-2600k with a 1070:

CPU: Sempron 2500+ / P4 2.8E / P4 2.6C / A64 x2 4000+ / E6420 / E8500 / i5-3470 / i7-3770
GPU: TNT2 M64 / Radeon 9000 / MX 440-SE / 7300GT / Radeon 4670 / GTS 250 / Radeon 7950 / 660 Ti
