Is this safe? Please help!

Hello, earlier today I was downloading some music off convert2mp3.net (originally from soundcloud), and went to download the artwork by right clicking the image on the convert2mp3 and clicking the usual "Save image as", but it downloaded as a .php file.. Which seemed odd.

After further investigation, .php files can be used for viruses. 

 

Can somebody who is tech-savy please tell me whether or not I downloaded a virus, when I changed format to a .png it worked fine...

 

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this stuff, ran a full-scan on Windows defender, no threats.. But still not sure.

 

i didn't open the .php, but can it still damage my system?

 

Help would be appreciated,

Pretty sure a php file wont even run locally, unless your computer is also running a php server as well.. (I know from experience). So yes, you are safe.

And to be safe in the future, I wouldn't go ahead changing the file extensions of suspicious files to try to get them to work. If a download turns out to be something else than expected, just delete it. If you absolutely must mess with sites doing annoying things with their pictures, try drag and dropping the picture to your computer instead.

Lol, sites doesn't do anything with their pictures but resizing or running server side scripts for statistics.

Extension is php because image manipulation and other php scripts are works with that extension. And since web browsers doesn't care about extension (you may rename your gif to jpg or even mp3 and it still works), some websites leave .php extension for images instead of creating strange settings or entries that treat jpeg files as php scripts.

Ok, the reason I don't use Spotify is because only a limited amount of songs I listen to are there... Plus having the extra tab kills my internet speed while gaming/uploading

Spotify doesn't, even with premium you can't download the mp3 file..

Nothing that I've ever seen allows you to do that without purchasing each song individually.

 

I wouldn't mind paying for an album with 15+ songs.. but when it's like $2 for each song.. it's a bit ridiculous, considering I don't even really listen to the music a whole lot, mainly use it for background music in videos.

A moment ago it was about saving system/network resources, now it's about breaking the copyright law in an even worse way. I have a creeping suspicion that there'll always be something, but since this is technically offtopic to begin with let's just leave it be.

What do you mean by this?

My internet cannot handle spotify while doing other tasks, so I need to download the songs to mp3, which spotify premium does not support. 

I also cannot afford to spend $2 per song, when I have to download a lot of songs at once.
