3x4gb ddr4 possible?

Hi, i currently have 8gb of ddr4 ram. 2x4gb. Now, this is not enough but i can't afford to buy another 2x4gb sticks. Can i just buy one for now and maybe a second one later? Will a 3x4gb setup work?

i have a ryzen 1600x processor on an asus b350 board.

it'll work just fine.
