Im wanting to upgrade...

Thorinox

Hello everyone, iv been wanting to look into small upgrades, and with such, I dont know what I can get that would work and not waste my money or time. Im in need of upgrading my ram (BEYOND BADLY I think), because im always on a budget of sorts, I can take my time into saving, and with my other upgrades out of the way, this 5 year old gaming PC is seeing a brighter future. Im not first of all, not looking for balls to the wall kind of gaming PC, I dont need it, just a casual gamer that expect a good performance that will last for now.

Right now im needing to up grade my ram, I currently have (and it came with the computer) 2 sticks of Kingston Value RAM 4GB 1600MHz PC3-12800 DDR3 Non-ECC CL11 DIMM SR x8 Destop Memory (I didnt even know much about gaming computers at the time, so I bought what I thought was good till I learned more)
Link to my ram: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008CP5QR2/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3LKWIQ3PBTNT2

The mother board that came with my computer is a GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-USB3 (rev. 6.0) AM3+/AM3 AMD 760G USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
Only reliable link I know of: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128565

With that, without spending a huge amount of money, what kind of RAM do you guys suggest me to get? Im looking to get 2x of 8GB ram to give me 16GB, and thats fine and more the enough for me. 8GB is now barely enough for me these days. What that said, id prefer to have them non LED, Im not into that LED stuff, but I do kinda want them colored to either black or red. After what iv looked at I was thinking that I could possible get if they will work...

Or

Now, if my mother board just isnt going to support these ram or I should look into a newer motherboard since my getting old, I was thinking of this one...
MSI Arsenal Gaming Intel Kaby Lake Z270M DDR4 HDMI USB 3 Crossfire ATX Motherboard (Z270 Gaming Plus

To all the help, I thank you in advance!

Your motherboard uses AMD3+ socket & DDR3 ram.

You need DDR3 ram not DDR4 as the one you've linked above.

Even if you upgrade the motherboard, you would not be able to use your old cpu because Kaby lake is Intel LGA1151 not AMD3+.

So You Wanna Be A Playa, But Your Rig's Ain't Fly,

You've Got To Pimp My Riggggggg...  (DAMN RIGHT)

That's DDR4 RAM. Your board uses DDR3 so that wouldn't work.

That would also require a CPU upgrade. I wouldn't recommend it though as that's a last gen socket.

So, should I get the new motherboard first, (and CPU) then the ram? Because thats just a little extra wait time for me, which is fine.

But will the R5 1600 work with the MSI Arsenal?

No it would not. An R5 1600 uses the AM4 socket, so it would need an A320/B350/X370/B450/X470 motherboard. The Z270 board you mentioned only would support a 6000 or 7000 series CPU from Intel.

I would probably recommend you get either an R5 1600 or R5 2600 paired with a B450 or X470 board (probably an X470 board, as some like the X470 gaming plus only cost $100), or an i5 8400 + B360 motherboard. As for RAM, the two kits you mentioned are a bit on the expensive side. Something like this kit would be much cheaper but still pretty solid and have RGB too

Okay, can we simplify this for a moment with a few things? (all these names and numbers are getting me a little confused, because I dont know a huge amount about all the brands and whatnots of computers parts) With what information we have gathered throughout this, my PC is 5ish+ years old.

1) Should I continue to use my GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-USB3 (rev. 6.0) AM3+/AM3 AMD 760G USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard that is running a AMD (fx)-6300 6 Core Processor or get something newer?

1.1) Get newer/better ram of some sort.

2) If I should get something newer, would that MSI Arsenal Gaming Motherboard be better and if so, how much better?
2.1) And what CPU should I get that is good, not the best or worst, meet in the middle, or if there is a better one for a few bucks more, let me know too (links would be nice)

3) With said motherboard in 2, would the Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz be better suited for it?

Sure, these names can definitely get pretty confusing if you don't follow tech super closely :P

I would not stick with your current motherboard and processor. The processor is really old and doesn't perform that well. As well, your motherboard doesn't support any of the newer, much more powerful processors released in the past two years. Spending money to buy a processor that would work with your gigabyte motherboard probably wouldn't make much of a difference in games.

Here, I'll start by talking about two of the most important things when looking at a motherboard: the chipset and socket. The socket is the part of the motherboard the cpu physically fits into. Meanwhile, the chipset is like the hub on the motherboard that the cpu connects to. The chipset then outputs a bunch of I/O, such as usb ports, pcie lanes, and sata ports. Different tiers of chipsets indicate more features. Right now, chipset names are generally of the form letter followed by three numbers (e.g. X470). The hundreds digit generally indicates the generation, while the letter and numbers indicate the tiering. As you would imagine, X470 would be better than b450 because the number is bigger.

See, the thing is, the motherboard is fine. But the problem is what cpus it supports. That motherboard uses a Z270 chipset from Intel, which means it uses a 200 series chipset. It also has an LGA 1151 socket. That means it only supports 6000 and 7000 series cpus from intel (so for example, an i5 6400, i5 6600k, i7 6700, i5 7500, and i7 7700k would all work with it). However, it does not support the newer 8000 series cpus from intel. Intel's newer 8000 series cpus use the LGA 1151V2 socket and have many more cores than the older cpus, and so are much faster. However, because they use a different socket, they don't work with older 200 series boards with the LGA 1151 socket. Instead, they only work with boards with Intel's newer 300 series chipset (e.g. H310, b360, z370). Hence why I don't recommend the z270 board. It's not because the board is bad, but because it's outdated and doesn't support newer, much faster cpus.

Alternatively, you could look into amd's ryzen cpus. These use the am4 socket, so they only work with motherboards with am4 sockets. Am4 motherboards use sockets b350, x370, b450, and x470 (I know, it's really annoying that they also have 300 series chipsets. So make sure to check if the socket is the right one!).

I think if you're looking to upgrade, you should be figuring out what cpu you want first, before finding compatible motherboards that offer all the features you want/need.

That ram would work with a motherboard with any of the chipsets or sockets I mentioned. How much does it cost though? It's possible you might be able to get just as good ram for cheaper.

Last time I checked (the time I wrote the last one) it was on amazon for around $150.

Honestly, what motherboard/CPU/16GB Ram, would you recommend for lets say $400-500. Just to throw out some numbers. Mind you, I dont need the best, just something thats good.

At that price point I'd probably choose an i5 8400 + B360 mobo + 16gb RAM (should amount to about $400) or R5 2600/X + X470 Gaming Plus + 16gb RAM which would cost about $450. The i5 8400 should be a bit better at gaming unless you OC the 2600 or 2600x. The 2600/x would be better at stuff like streaming.

Could you please provide me some links for those?
