Need opinions to a new GPU 1080TI VS AMD RX Vega 64

Mike87

Hi all,

I am searching a lot trough the web trying to inform myself on the latest stand regarding Gaming GPUs.

The thing is, I want to upgrade my PC with a new GPU and alter a new Monitor. I game everything from HOTS to AAA games like BF1, BF5, Tomb Raider, etc. I am now looking for a new GPU and I thought the best buy would be the GTX 1080 TI but now I am not sure anymore.

What I want is to later upgrade to an WQHD Monitor (1440p, at least 100hz) and want to have a great gaming quality. I want to be able to play the latest and future AAA Games with very high settings. Not everything maxed but near it :D

So here I am searching for the best price/power GPU. Like I said, my first thought was to get the GTX 1080 Ti but I also saw that the  AMD RX Vega 64 is near the 1080ti but costs about 40% less.

Comparing the EVGA GTX 1080 ti ~750€ and the Gigabyte Radeon RX Vega 64 ~450€.

What is your opinion? Get the overpriced GTX 1080ti and be sure you are set for the next 2-3 years or save the money and invest in something else? Like I said, I am only interested in 1440p gaming and at least 100hz.

What I should also mention, I don't have a very good cooling system and as far as I know, the AMD GPUs are not that good thermal optimized as nvidia. Is this still the case?

Thanks.

My Setup:

id grab the Vega at that price. the wide selection of freesync monitors is very entising.

also Vega gets better the higher resolution you play with.

also 750 Euro is a bit much for a 1080ti.

if you do end up getting the Vega, remember to pick up a freesync display to make the most of it. Vega GPUs run hot, but AIBs have made tic cooling solutions on the cards to negate that.

Nope, Vega 64 perform similar to GTX 1080.

true, which is why it costs 40% less than a 1080ti.

Right now I have a freesync 1080p monitor so it would be nice to stick with AMD GPU, but I am not sure if it will keep up with the future games. I don't want to buy a new GPU every year :/

Vega 64 is still a very powerful card. keep in mind  flagships from 4 years ago are still very good cards compared today. R9 290x and R9 390/x are goo examples. they still hold their own very well

Vega 64 performs closely to a GTX 1080, varying somewhat depending on the individual game and resolutions.
GTX 1080ti performs approximately 30% better than the GTX 1080, so about 30% better than the Vega 64 as well, varying slightly depending on the game and resolutions.

Where are you seeing a Vega 64 for 450 Euros? Checking sites such as Amazon.de and they're priced at around 550 Euros. So if you can pick one up for 450, then it's a pretty good deal.

Have a look at some benchmark tests which compare the Vega 64 to 1080ti in 1440p.
Here's an article with a fair few benchmarks (though I recommend finding others as well). You can toggle between 1440p, and 4k results, and it shows the results for 1070ti, 1080, 1080ti, Vega 56, and Vega 64.

Thanks to your fps overview, I don't think that the Vega will be enough? I mean I want to get into the 100-140hz range, so I will need at least constant 100 fps :/

I will watch the price development after the Nvidia 20er series release. Maybe it will drop 10-20%? who knows :D

Keep in mind those are AAA games on Ultra/Very High settings. You could turn a few things down to just High or turn down anti-aliasing and I'm sure you'd be able to hit 100+ FPS with the Vega64.
However, comparing them directly with all things equal, the 1080ti performs much better than the Vega 64.

You have a R9 290 at the moment? Since you don't have the 1440p monitor yet, I'd say maybe stick with the R9 290 for now while you're running 1080p.
Either wait for AMD's next gen Navi based cards which [hopefully] will perform better (who knows when they will come out, hopefully early 2019??), or just keep an eye on your local used market to see if a used 1080ti comes up for sale in the coming weeks/months. Nvidia's new RTX2000 series is launching in a few weeks, so if you're lucky there might be people nearby that are selling their old 1080tis if they are upgrading to RTX.

I understand an I am with you. I was also thinking about buying a used 1080ti but I am scared that it is a mining GPU and already has somekind of issue :/

I will wait for the 20s release, if I am correct, the prices of the 10 series will frist drop, then depending on the reviews of the 20s it will go lower or rise again if it fails. lets see :D

Thanks a lot :)

One more question, if I was to get the Vega, will I have problems since it is the OC version? Thermal prblems e.g.?

Ok I just ordered the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Gaming OC for 600€, I don't think the price is gonna drop anymore :D

Are you still using that i5-4570? If yes you gonna have trouble getting 100fps in some games.

Yes I will keep it at first and see how it goes. Right now it only hits cap in BF1 MP, but also my GPU... so maybe if the GPU isn't at 100% anymore the CPU will settle down a bit.

Anyways it needs to do because I need to save up money for a new CPU :D

a quick feedback:

you guys were right, my CPU is indeed a bottleneck for my GTX 1080Ti, or at least in multiplayers... In BF1 in MP Conquest, my CPU is at 100% and my GPU between 30-50% @ultra 1080, 80-90fps. In COD WW2 SP both are at 100% @ultra 1080 whit about 100-120fps which should be fine.

I can live with that right now since I only have a 72hz 1080p monitor :D

You're asking if a high-end GPU will keep up? If you buy either of these cards you'll be able to handle games for 3-4 years. My r9 290x lasted me 5 years before I upgraded to a 1070 ti. Either way, with your build and 600 euros, I'm not sure I would have spent it on the 1080 ti.

Having done that, you should upgrade your CPU and monitor right now... otherwise you might as well have bought a lower tier GPU or waited to buy the 1080 ti when you could have afforded a new monitor and cpu and also got the 1080 ti cheaper to boot. Just as @Spotty advised you.
