R9 280 running WAY too hot!

Meritorius

I've built a good friend of mine a pc out of used parts. (i7 3770, 4*4gb ddr3 1600 MHz, Club3D r9 280 aka hd7950, Sharkoon ATX case with 2 green front intake fans and 1 outtake backfan, 1,5 tb hdd 7200rpm)

The problem is that the gcard and therefore the whole PC get way too hot

(gpu idle 44°C, load 80-90°C, front panel was taken off, it's not the problem).

Once the side panel is put away, the temperature instantly drops by 8-12°C.

Anyone here who knows why it runs so hot and what one can do to solve it?

That is normal temps for the r9 280?

r9 280 is good up to 95c, so you are fine.

Your case just seems to have restrictive airflow.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

I don't worry about the card but about my friends quality of life.

Also somehow it doesn't get hotter than 68°C if the sidepanel's off

Again also normal, when sidepanel is off then the gpu is treated to a nice supply of cold air, but when it is on the card struggles to get fresh air.

Have you thought about replacing the thermal paste on the GPU? Also how restrictive is the case?

the 280s tend to run hot

AMD Ryzen 3950x under a Noctua D15S, 32 Gb G Skill FlareX 3200 DDR4 running at 3200 CL14, Gigabyte Aorus Pro 570 Wifi, Gigabyte 2070 Super hooked to a Dell U2718Q 4k HDR monitor & an Acer 1440p 144hz IPS panel of some kind, an Inland 1 TB M.2 PCIE 4 main drive, a Samsung NVME M.2 250Gb, WD Blue 500Gb  and 1 TB SSDs, Corsair RMX750, Rainbows and butterflies...

Without the side panel, the card has better access to colder air and therefore will stay cooler.

Re-apply the thermal paste on the GPU core. This will involve removing the heatsink.

Non-blower design gpus need really good airflow in the case, otherwise the same air circulates through them multiple times, which of course leads to higher temps. Proper air flow across the gpu and evacuation of the hot air can be surprisingly difficult in some cases...

CPU: Intel i7 3970X @ 4.7 GHz  (custom loop)   RAM: Kingston 1866 MHz 32GB DDR3   GPU(s): 2x Gigabyte R9 290OC (custom loop)   Motherboard: Asus P9X79

Case: Fractal Design R3    Cooling loop:  360 mm + 480 mm + 1080 mm,  tripple 5D Vario pump   Storage: 500 GB + 240 GB + 120 GB SSD,  Seagate 4 TB HDD

PSU: Corsair AX860i   Display(s): Asus PB278Q,  Asus VE247H   Input: QPad 5K,  Logitech G710+    Sound: uDAC3 + Philips Fidelio x2
