Build for my Roommate

Twitch213

My roommate wants me to build him his first rig at the end of the month.

We are in Denver, CO. So we have a local Microcenter.

Budget: $1000-$1400

Aim: GAMING. He currently plays FF15 but wants to be able to play whatever. Doesn't plan on streaming or anything but said the option would be nice in the future.

Monitors: He will just be using his TV for awhile but he wants to get a 1080/144 monitor soon.

Other: NZXT S340... Black and Red... Wants it to look good too!

Also I am just giving him an extra 4TB HDD I have. So no need for Mass storage

Updated list:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8vKgFt

Thoughts or Recommendations? Thanks!

get rid of that horrible cooler and then we are talking.

Get the Arctic 33 Esports edition instead, it is a much better cooler for the money.

Or if you want leds get the Deepcool Gammax GT RGB.

No reason to get the hyper 212 in this day and age.

@OrbitalBuzzsaw and @seoz Where are you when you are needed?

I only see your reply if you @ me.

Those are both sweet. But it's half the price? Is that not a good enough reason? Haha

The arctic and deepcool only 10$ more and perform and look much better

It is not like you are really going to send the mail in rebate.

Switched to the 8700K, a much better cooler, a better SSD, better case, and a better PSU. The extra threads from the 8700K will give much more headroom for streaming in the future. Even kept the color theme.

I was trying not to spend the whole budget and just feel like the extra $100 would be wasted on the 8700k. I will probably be changing the cooler and PSU though. He was kind of set on that case which I didn't mention and that's why I had the SanDisk so it would match since it's so front and center in that case...

You may have convinced me with this one. It's kind of dope. I might have to get one for my rig as well... (And I always send in my rebates!)

If your roommate was just going to be gaming I'd be inclined to agree, but for streaming I can guarantee he'll be wanting the 8700K especially if he wants to join the big boy club and use x264 instead of NVENC via Shadowplay/OBS.

Fair enough on the SSD choice though, the SSD Plus isn't bad for its price. At least you didn't choose a dinky little Kingston budget SSD.

@seoz @OrbitalBuzzsaw Reporting back to base, mission successful.

Hyper 212 is defeated once again by the supreme overlord, Arctic 33 Esports Edition.

I'm sure he will only be gaming. He said that, but he isn't the kind of person who would want people to watch him play. The more I think about it the more I can't see him streaming.

Fair enough. Good luck on the build.

For just gaming, the 8400 is fine. No need for the 8600K.

If you get the 8400, you can get a cheaper cooler, like the M9i or Pure Rock Slim.

The Z370-H is just the Z370-P, just more flashy and priced higher. Meaning it's crap and way overpriced. Just get the cheapest Z370 board to overclock the RAM, or get a better board for the same price.

Get cheaper and faster RAM.

The SSD Plus is a garbage SSD with a variable BOM. Just get the cheapest SSD or a nicer one for a little more.

The S340 Elite has poor airflow. The H500 is the replacement, and costs less, I think.

The TXM is not worth it for that price. Assuming you'll overclock, a good 450W is plenty. The Focus Plus Gold 550W is available for $60 after rebate, get that. Alternatively, the Formula 450W.

:)
