Are 650 watt PSUs are the max of what people go for in builds. Seems to be common among these forums.

 

What are the disadvantages or advantages of having more wattage than you need?

Disadvantages are that they cost more and you'll be further down the efficiency graph so spend slightly more on electricity. 

 

There is no advantages other than future proofing, but even then unless you plan to run an overclocked 7980xe and multiple titans there's really no need to bother.

my build will be a ryzen 5 2600x and 1070, maybe even 1080. my wattage on pc parts picker is in the mid 339w. even if i upgraded to the 2700x my wattage will still be in the middle

Almost nobody is doing more than two GPUs these days or running extreme edition CPUs, so high wattage power supplies are unnecessary for most people and would just be a waste of money.

I bought a 750watt cos it was on sale at the time and was litterally something like £4 less than the 650watt i was gonna buy.

Some of them are but any with a wire fan grill is fairly quiet

It's a good unit for its price but if you could you should upgrade to something like Seasonic Focus+ Gold

80+ gold units are just more efficient at converting wall power.

What specific Thermatake unit? They make a lot of good ones but also a lot of bad ones

you can get a GQ, G1+ or seasonic focus online that are just as good for less, get those instead.

excellent and that will go into a Fractal design meshify C case? I found that one earlier and tried putting it in pcpartspicker for compatability and i couldnt find that specific psu in the pcpartspicker list.

 

Also how loud is that one?

It's common because a majority of the new builders are unaware of how to choose a psu. And the fact that a lot of people, doing their 2nd/3rd build are ignorant and never cared about putting forth the effort to look into it, as getting rgb on memory is more important.

 

Also gold units are more efficient at high loads, if you're nearing 500 watts (unlikely) for example you will be more efficient performing than a bronze or silver rated psu.

Its more like 550 and 400-450 if you want to save money.

Waste money

higher fan RPM as the higher wattage doesn't give you any benefit at all.

 

So why do you want the Overwatt route when you could go for a better one?

Yes, because the difference between Gold and Bronze in manufacturing is less than 5€ or something like that.

Because of that, they save

I have many dead Seasonic PSU. (AFAIR something like 50% of my Seasonic PSU are dead).

Without more information, that statement is useless.

 

And your System might eventually even be in a range where the fan doesn't spin...

But once the fan spins on some higher wattage ones, its not quiet no more.
