What happened and is there any update with larrabee

Intel scrapped the project for use as a GPU, but turned it into the Xeon Phi, which is a real product.

Interesting...Does installing the driver for the xeon phi make it boot?

Recent Xeon Phis basically act as a many-core general purpose processor as far as the OS is concerned, if this is any indication (from https://www.anandtech.com/show/12172/intel-lists-knights-mill-xeon-phi-on-ark-up-to-72-cores-at-320w-with-qfma-and-vnni):

Any new updates on the larrabee gpu? @LinusTech

If you mean the Larrabee prototype we got our hands on, it's currently on hold until we can find a driver. We have plans to actually troubleshoot it, but since the prospects of it working are slim until we can get that driver, it's a low priority for us.

The reason is that it's probably required to get any output from the GPU at all. There may even be some JTAG / serial connection that needs to be made to "wake up" the card, since it's a prototype and, AFAIK, actually boots its own "OS" in firmware to provide the DirectX/OpenGL to x86 abstraction... So there's probably at least some tinkering we'll need to do beneath the shroud, too.

TL;DR it'll be a lot of work to get an update out on it, so it'll probably take some time yet.

Yeah i do mean the gpu. There is a driver people posted on the original thread, and a lot of ideas people suggested to make it working again.

And well good luck with the troubleshooting. I just hope there will be an update, and that you guys haven't forgotten about it :D

Og Thread-

I think Linus is dead wrong in calling this a KNC...  it's clearly the Larrabee GPU / Aubrey Isle around the KNF / Knights Ferry era
