Microsoft Monthly fee?

donalgodon

First off, fuck Forbes and the fact that you can't close the video out.

The Microsoft Managed Desktop program seems to be limited to businesses and enterprise sectors, so my guess is that it won't affect the average consumer.

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!

As far as I'm aware they can't retroactively decide that a free OS suddenly needs to be paid for. They could lock out future software updates, but they can't lock you out of your operating system. That would be ransomware and that would cause them so much legal trouble that they wouldn't be able to avoid essentially getting wiped out by all the lawsuits. They could stop providing updates to "free" users, but they'd probably get a ton of backlash for that too, so I doubt they'd do it.

If anything, "Windows 11" will become a subscription OS.

What this article is talking about appears to be related to business deployments and is not directly linked to the operating system as a whole. Forbes loves playing the clickbait game, so they're trying to twist it in a way to scare people that read the article into reading the whole thing.

Eh, depends how much they want to ask. If it was something like $20/year, I honestly wouldn't mind paying it if there were some kind of extra features included.

If people don't like it, they can go use Linux, or unsupported older Microsoft OS platforms. If Microsoft decides too many people leave, they'll change back, if they decide that the fee they're collecting from the people paying it is enough, then those people will be the ones missing out.

Your post doesn't really meet the guidelines, pal.

For corporations its easy sell. Most have already outsourced IT support and buy it as service. Adding OS fee to that might be good if it lowers total costs for upgrading hardware.

For consumers that might just be the turnpoint of subscription services. Right now monthly cost for Windows 10 Home if bought when launched and used for full 10 years of update support is $1/mo. If it would be something like $3/mo (price of Floatplane club) or $5/mo (price of Twitch subscriptions), you'd expect to get almost full version of OS every 2-3 years. At that point Linux sounds much better with new LTS version of popular distros coming in 1-2 years.

So we'll need to see. I bet MS does it with soft test if they do it with consumers. Like Office 365 is now. You can still pay for non-subscription version which is same thing without extra cloud space.
