Is That's normal it stays at x4 when it's on Ideal and nothing is running and goes up to  10 when somethings running goes to x16 x10 x16 x10 so I don't know if this is normal, my older CPU(Athlon x2 5200+) never did that I just stayed constantly on x13.5.  So is it normal for this chip to be jumping all over like that or did I do something wrong.  But the PC runs flawlessly.  Please let me know thanks a lotPlease let me know thanks a lotimage.thumb.jpg.21659bd770943c147a21e024a7273fd9.jpgimage.thumb.jpg.1efe34b689fd5ccd99b6b614fec6e855.jpg

Wait...the Phenom II X4 955 should come with a beefier stock cooler.

those were the "new" coolers

my 4100 (2012) and 8350 (2013) came with the AM2 stock, never used the last one though because I got an H100i with the 8350

or maybe those heatpipe coolers were only sold in certain regions and not worldwide

What computer case do you have?

The case manufacturer will usually list the size, and you can follow that information.

The standard Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO will be enough.

Depends what is available in your region, but the Tier 5, 6, 7 coolers will be good.

140mm might be too big if you have a smaller computer case.

Given that you are using a lower grade motherboard, even if you are going to overclock, I would not push it very high.

Also, Phenom II CPU's ...on air cooling ... reaches maximum overclock at around 3.8 GHz ~ 4.0 GHz ..... if you are lucky, you could get 4.1/4.2 GHz.

THAT IS, if you have a good enough cooler + motherboard to push it that far.

I believe the FX-4100 DID come with the aluminum-only heatsink.

Even the FX-6100 did...I think.

As for the FX-8350, it might be regional during the early times.

Did you get your FX-8350 with the metal box, or the cardboard box?

Seeing how the FX-81xx and FX-83xx CPUs are rated at 125W TDP, I would assume they would use the aluminum + copper heatsink.

Well the bad luck continues so today I try to turn my computer on it comes on no display I'm thinking that my graphic card went out already so I unplug it and put it on my onboard GPU still nothing.    Come to find out the little snap on for my heat sink the little plastic broke so I'm guessing you need pressure on a CPU for it to work.   So I kinda rigged it with drilling a hole on the side that black plastic and zip tied it as tight as I could. And boom PC came on the temperature is a little bit high about 40 C  it's usually 35 Celsius. I guess the computer gods want to meet a replace my CPU cooler .

You can order a new bracket.

The black plastic mount bracket is held on by 4 screws.

Newegg / eBay will have them.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4SR1WT7072&cm_re=AM3_bracket-_-9SIA4SR1WT7072-_-Product

The Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO uses the stock bracket, and same locking mechanism, so you'll need to order a new one before installing it.

Some aftermarket coolers don't even use the stock bracket -- they will have their own mounting system.

The ASUS M2A VM is a standard mATX format motherboard.

Basically ANY mATX/ATX case that exists will work.

Basically ANY mATX/ATX case that exists will work.

i'll look into your suggestions Wow man thanks a lot for all your help i'll look into your suggestions

Oh sorry, the Hyper 212 EVO uses their own supplied mounting bracket and backplate.

(The Corsair A50 air cooler...yeah Corsair had air coolers...that I owned back in the day re-used the stock plastic mount)

Like I said before, depends on which cooler you decide to get or use.

Wait...the Phenom II X4 955 should come with a beefier stock cooler.

Only the 125W TDP version ;).

In the later life of the Phenom 955 without BE was released with lower TDP of only 95W

So there is about half a dozen versions of the Phenom 955, C2 and the better C3 in BE and not in 125W and 95W....

Yes, that is totally normal and works as intended as they improved the power saving features with K10 and also later.

But your 5200+ should also be able to switch frequency, AFAIR it should have 3 Stages: 800 or 1000MHz and 1800MHz (though rarely seen). And the Athlon 64 was the first desktop processor that officially supported clock changes while running.

This thing isn't and was used in mobile computers for years and this feature was disabled for desktop processors.

For example there were mods available for later Athlon XP systems (if you had a VIA Chipset) to change the frequency....

Anyway, your PSU doesn't look too good for more modern Systems. What do you have?
Some random thing with 25A or more on +5V and like 20A on +12V??

So yesterday when i rigged the cooler, everytime i pull my heat sink the cpu is stuck on it.  I thought the metal locking supposed to hold it in place on my board.  I locked it in last time so i dont under stand.  the white tray moves back when i lift the lever and place the chip and lock it in.

Yeah, the locking system is not as secure compared to Intel's. I have pulled a few AM2/AM3 CPUs out of the socket when it was still locked down, too.

As long as you don't see any damage on the white socket, and no bent pins on the bottom of the CPU, you should be okay.

The best way I find is to:

1) Warm up the CPU first, so the thermal paste is warm and more "liquid". Basically use the computer for a little bit, like you normally would, then take the CPU out.

2) when removing the cooler/heatsink use a twisting motion. Not just pull up and away. Twist it left and right a few times, then slowly pull + twist.

The T4 is the little brother of the Hyper 212.

If you won't be doing any overclocking, it will do just as fine.
