Is delidding the i7 8700k mandatory?

Hey yall,

Does using an i7 8700k with a NH-D15S air cooler require delidding or not? I'm guessing if you plan to pass 5.0GHZ then it would require it regardless. However, what would be the safest overclock possible with this air cooler that would still keep the CPU under good temperatures (without delidding)?

I was 5GHz fine at decent temps before de-lidding.

I can run 5.2, but just stick to 5 unless benchmarking.

Allows me to keep the fan at the lowest possible RPM and maintain great temps.

voltage on or below 1.2v should maintain a good 70C temperature under stress test without blasting the fans hard. It's better for you to keep Hwinfo running so you can monitor the temperatures while doing stress tests.

Delidding is definitely not mandatory unless you wanted to squeeze every last ounce of preformance out of the cpu. You should still be able to achieve a moderate overclock even on air, just keep in mind you won't be able to push the voltage much.

if your case has good airflow you probably fine at a max of 1.350V

now every CPU is different so yours might do 5ghz at 1.250V 1.300V and some even need 1.400V so really depends on the silicon lottery.

do you need to delid? no

people delid either to increase their overclocks or they want to lower temps so they can run lower rpm fans for lower noise.
