Well for the last 4 years I was running an i5 4670, GTX 670, 16GB DDR3 and some fans. Now my HX850 will be power a X470 with a 2700 and 16GB of DDR4 with a 240mm AIO. Plus I plan to overclock the 2700. I guess my biggest concern is that I've never ran a PSU until it died. I've read that a qaulity PSU typically just dies and doesn't take anything with it? That is my fear because as I said, tomorrow I have a X470, Ryzen 2700 and 16GBs of DDR4 coming so I'd like that stuff not to go up in flames 6 months from now haha

my Rm died without anny problems. You cant be 100% sure but mostly they have enugh protective stuff. ANd HX should be fine with what youre doing to it ;)

I'm just curious how many years everyone has gotten out of their PSU?

I just ordered some upgrades for my PC and in the last year I've replaced everything from Case, CPU, Mobo, RAM, GPU, Monitor, Keyboard, HDD. My smaller 250GB SSD and 8 year old Corsair HX850 are the only things I haven't changed in a while.

So I'm just curious how many years people have squeezed out of a decent PSU?

Damn, so far I'm at the most. I guess I'm trying to figure out if I should try to convince my wife that I should just replace my PSU now instead of dealing with a possible failure in the near future and replacing it then haha. I've also heard of PSUs lasting 10-12 years so maybe I'll get lucky!!

Your guys 6-8 years so far isn't reassuring haha

If you're not abusing it like @Metallus97 did, you should be fine.

In my opinion it depends on the quality of the unit.  I would expect a cheap unit to last maybe 3-6 years, a quality unit had better last 8-10 years.  I have a power supply still running that I bought in 2005.  Its a OCZ PowerStream OCZ520ADJ.  Still runs strong.  I hope that my evga 850 g2 lasts as long as that one has.

May I ask what the hell are you powering with it? Your house?

Killed a few crappy PSUs and also had a friend who basically hotboxed their AX750 by not letting it intake air at the bottom of the case due to carpet.

Generally a good PSU will last 10 years without problems, but there are exceptions to every rule. If it has a sleeve-bearing fan then I wouldn't go too much longer over the warranty period.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Well that makes me feel a lot better! Thanks. I think I'll just chance it and try to push another 6 months to a year out of my PSU until it's a little more economical to drop another $130-$150 into my PC.

Thanks everyone for all the quick replies!!

An HX650 will probably last longer, I wouldn't worry about it. When you put a bunch of money into upgrades though, yeah that's a good time to replace it.

Depends on the PSU and the usual failure Mode.

IF it is the caps, you got some problems because that can really destroy the Components.

But that is the worst case scenario however, in many times other Things die so there is no real damage to the components...
