Hello LTT,

In my household we have one (my) gaming PC. We do have multiple Gamers though and are playing some games together via aster (virtual windows session -> two inputs on one pc). This creates problems with steam games and of course it pretty much halves the computers power.

I figured that i want to build a new PC for myself with the upcoming generation of NVidia graphics cards anyway so why not 'split' my current PC in half and wait for the next gen. I want to end up with a really good main-gaming pc (1440p/Witcher/BF1/Pubg should run well) and a okayish second gaming pc (1080p/WoW/League/Dota).

Here is the plan:

Current PC :

  • I5-4690k on MSI Z97 U3 Plus

  • Zotac GTX 970

  • 12gb DDR 3 Ram

  • 450 Seasonic PSU

  • 2TB HDD + 500GB HDD

  • 256 SSD Evo 850+

  • NZXT Case

Shopping List :

  • I5-8600k
  • ASRock - Z370 Extreme4 ATX
  • 1050 GTX (4gb) or 1060 GTX (3gb)
  • 16gig DDR 4 Ram
  • Any fitting(for secondary pc) PSU
  • Any value Case

I would build like this:

Main PC :

  • I5-8600k

  • ASRock - Z370 Extreme4 ATX

  • 16gig DDR 4 Ram

  • Zotac GTX 970

  • 256 SSD Evo 850+

  • 2TB HD

Secondary PC :

  • I5-4690k on MSI Z97 U3 Plus
  • 1050 GTX (4gb) or 1060 GTX (3gb)
  • 12gb DDR 3 Ram
  • fitting PSU
  • Case
  • 500GB HDD

The idea is, after buying the parts and setting the PC's up, I will wait for the next generation of graphic cards, drop another ~500€ for the 1070 sucessor, put it into the 8600k machine and the 970 gtx can 'migrate' down into the secondary pc.

Questions on my mind: Does it make sense what i want to do or should i wait for the next gen graphics cards and build a complete PC from scratch so that the main pc now becomes the secondary. (Thing is with WoW Bfa dropping i don't think the PC can handle to players in raids thus i feel some time pressure.)

SSD for the secondary pc?

Wich Manufacturer/specific graphics card to go with for the secondary pc?

Wich DDR 4?

Budget is about 900€ - 1000€(Germany), any feedback greatly appreciated. Link to my PC-Partpicker shopping list(wip) here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/TdsRFt

what you plan to do here is not really splitting your current PC, all you do is build a new one and take some drives and the GPU out of the old one which is also what i would have recommended.

i would also suggest top get a new case for your new Main PC simply to avoid the extra work of removing everything just to transfer it to another case.

AMD build (with SSD AND HDD) 1003 Euros, https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/6VFWfH

Intel Build (with SSD and HDD) - just swap in an intel board and CPU.

The thing is, are you going to OC or not?  this could make a big difference in what to suggest.

Thank you for your suggestion! I don't plan to overclock no, without the HDD and SSD and with a cheaper case think ill be able to wiggle in an intel cpu and mainboard.

If you're not going to OC, don't get a Z motherboard, as you won't be using it really.. I think you should go for this  https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/MPfsmq

And just add whatever case you want. Anyway, hope that helps :)

You can go for cheaper memory too if you want, as intel isn't as affected by the ram speed.

Intel is still highly effected by memory speed, it just takes less work to get that benefit out of high-speed DDR4. (Standard XMP works better on Intel than AMD. That's the biggest difference.)

You're pretty much just building a new, primary PC. Can move the 2 TB HDD, but the rest should be a full new system build.

All right thanks to your suggestions i lookead a little more into mainboards. I Really want to make the 8600k (8600 has a lower base clock right?) happen.

What do you think of this final build?

https://de.pcpartpicker.com/user/marsu/saved/XVpbXL

Don't be fooled by the lower base clock. The two cpu have the same turbo clocks. Essentially any load is going to result in the same performance.

The i5-8600 is a really good choice unless one wants to overclock. The i5-8600K can overclock which is attractive to some, but it needs a more expensive motherboard and cpu cooler to do so.

There is little point in putting an i5-8600K on an H370 motherboard.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
