so i have purchased a win server 12 data center activation key for a home lab kinda thing and am wanting to put some vm's on one of my servers (with win 12 server DC running on it) i saw a video that explained you with data center you can put unlimited VM's on one server but does this also mean you can use the same key to activate win 12 dc VM's on the same device

if you start a win server VM, I would imagine there would be no issue with keys, as you wouldn't need to buy a new one (microsoft is greedy but not that greedy) so it should work fine

Yes, that's basically what that means. With Windows Server Standard you get 2 OSEs, so two operating system environments in addition to the virtualization host itself, and Datacenter gets rid of this limit entirely.
