So I just figured out that 4k isn't actually 4k and no I don't mean that cinema 4k isn't manufacturer 4k. But rather the statement that 4 times 1080p(HD) is 4k but if you do the math it turns out to be (1920 x 1080) HD times 4 would actually be 7680 x 4320 which I Googled and that's apparently 8k? So I'm confused and just wanted to ask the question

If you had a 1 × 1 square, you need four of them to make a 2 × 2 square.

Anyway, 4K isn't called "4K" because it's 4 × 1080p, it's called 4K because it's ≈4,000 pixels in width.

4K is x4 the pixels of 1080p, what the hell are you talking about?

Not quite...

Consumer 4K = 3840 × 2160 (FHD x 2 / HD x 3))

FHD = 1920x1080

HD = 1280×720

that is wrong, 4K is not FHD x 2...
3840 * 2160 =
8294400 pixels
1920 * 1080 = 2073600 pixels
8294400 / 2073600 = 4

I was referring to vertical pixel length but at least OP got the basics of it.

still is wrong to say that though, FHD x 2 would be 3840x1080 (which would be 32:9 aspect ratio, and those monitors exist)

3840 * 1080 = 4147200 pixels
1920 * 1080 = 2073600 pixels

4147200 / 2073600 = 2
hope it helps

4k is a hole you throw money down.

Before 4k I was happy with my GTX 980 & 27" 1920X1080 60hz monitor. Then I saw a 4k monitor running a 4k demo.

4k is really UHD-1. Here is a nice chart.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_resolution

4K is a general category of resolutions. There are many resolutions that are classified as 4K, including (but not limited to) the resolution chosen for the UHD-1 system (3840 × 2160).

For the record, "UHD-1" is the name of DVB's plan to roll out 4K resolution to broadcast television, not just a name for the resolution used by the proposed system.
