Potential 8086K upgrade

Current build: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/MadOrc/saved/9DYHxr

I was thinking of upgrading my CPU to an 8086k with an Asus Prime z370-A, totaling $580. I was wondering if I could pay a different amount for more value per dollar. My reasoning is that there might be a premium for a special-edition type thing.

I mainly want to use my CPU for gaming, but I still do some photo/video editing that can make use of the extra two cores.

Thanks!

Get an 8700K instead of an 8086K. They're basically the same CPU and the 8700K costs less.

An i7-8700K is more or less the same thing. An 8086K is just a heavily binned 8700K. The 8086K is a collector's item moreso than a worthwhile cornerstone for your system.

There's no reason to upgrade your CPU for gaming, there won't be any major benefit for video editing either, as I'm pretty sure Skylake already supports intel quick sync in premiere.

If you aren't using Premiere go for Ryzen 7.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Hi

You will be disappointed going from a i7 6700k to a i7 8086k.

At the beginning of this year I upgraded my i7 2600k to a i7 8700k. It was a good move & I was really happy about it.

My other gaming computer had a i7 6700k. It was scheduled to be upgraded in 2019. After reading about the i7 8086k I decided to move the date up.

On my 32" 4k monitor vanila games run basically the same. The extra cores make some games a little smoother but not the price of the upgrade smoother.

At 4k I am not running into CPU bottlenecks with either chip.

Now just about 3 feet(1 meter) away from each other I have a i7 8700k rig & a i7 8086k rig. Both on Maximus Hero boards connected to GTX 1080 tis.

The i7 8086k is vastly superior to the i7 8700k if overclocking is what you like to do. It runs much faster & much cooler than the i7 8700k. It is well worth the extra money.

My i7 8086k has better temps at 5ghz on all cores than my i7 8700k does at 4.7ghz on all cores. That is with 1.344 v.

With a Noctua NH-D15 a 5ghz overclock is good for a 2 to 3c increase in temps. To get my i7 8700k up to 5ghz with 24-7 temps it would require a better cooling solution & maybe a delid. For that reason alone a i7 8086k is cheaper to own than a i7 8700k.

Do lots of research on motherboards. I am not an overclocking enthusiast & usually buy mid-ranged boards. For this generation the Maximus Hero is the only ASUS board I would own.

Out of all the people saying "get an 8700K", you single me out to criticize?

They are practically the same chip except for clock speeds and binning(supposedly). Most 8700Ks are able to reach 5Ghz(on all cores, last I checked) for a lower price than the 8086K.

50% of 8700K CPUs can break 5.1GHz. Almost all can break 5.0GHz on a good motherboard with adequate cooling. The "almost a sure thing" point for the 8086K is 5.1GHz, with over half capable of 5.2GHz.

If we go with the halfway point, you're talking a 100MHz difference over a total possible span of 5,200MHz. That's a 1.9% bump. Going down to the "anyone can do it" threshold makes it just over a 2% bump in performance in the 8086K's favor.

As of today, the 8700K comes in at $350. The 8086K at $420 (rounded numbers, of course). That's a $70 difference. The 8086K costs 20% more for a performance gain of roughly 2%.

There is no reason to buy an 8086K unless collector's value and/or e-peen is your goal.

the point is that you get a chip that can do 5GHz on all cores (considering Silicon Lottery statistics). Where it is only a 86% chance to get a 8700k that can do it.

Also according to Sillicon Lottery the chance of getting an i7 8700k that can do 5.2 is only at 17% while the chance for the 8086k is 60%, its a more than 3 times higher chance, closer to 4 times, to get a chip that can do 5.2GHz though.

If you are really into overclocking the 8086k isnt a bad product for its price. If you only consider price to performance all current CPUs are overpriced. And if people wouldnt be interessted in binned chips, siliconlottery.com wouldnt excist.
