The brief summary, someone I know will get a pre-built, or build a desktop. By getting an Intel 8th generation Coffee Lake-S CPU (either Core i5-8400, 8500, 8600 or a i7-8700) it will need a LGA1151 socket motherboard. Now, one member is probably right by saying while a lot of CPUs/motherboards have that socket, if someone is looking for some longevity/future-proofness, it will depend on the chipset. Another member suggested to take a look at AMD given the use case described in the other post (light photo editing, light gaming)

From your collective experience, can we expect support from Intel and motherboards companies for some time? If not, other factors I did not consider enough?

They generally support their sockets for 2 generations.

Honestly, I don't see the huge deal. AMD is replacing theirs in 2020. So not that far off. And, really, by the time you upgrade, it'll be time to replace the board with something better anyway.

We would expect intel to have a CPU for the 300 series socket two gens. That would be 8th and 9th gen CPUs

AMD is doing 4 gen support on the AM4 Socket. This would be gen 1-4 Ryzen before swapping.

Intel will be changing socket in 2019 and AMD in 2020. Wether this is a big deal or not is up to yourself. To me it is as im chamging CPU in a year or two and i wanna keep the mobob
