LGA 1151 explane

Go to solution Solved by themctipers,

6th gen / 7th gen will work on 100 or 200 series motherboards only

8th gen only works on 300 series motherboards

h270 -> 6/7th gen

h170 -> 6/7th gen

z270 -> 6/7th gen

z370 -> 8th gen only

same socket, but different electrically. generally recommended to go 200 series for kaby instead of 100 because out of the box CPU support for kaby, 100 series needs a motherboard update to support kaby

If the CPU begins with 8, you need a 300 series board, and if it begins with 6 or 7 you need a 100 or 200 series board (bios update may be nescecary with 7000 series chips and 100 series boards).

Of course Pentiums and Celerons don't use that number scheme, so coffee lake is like a CPU beginning with 8, Kaby Lake like 7 and Skylake is like 6. Check Intel Ark for what series Pentium/Celeron you have.

This is of course the official explanation, you will be able to find articles online with people using an 8000 series CPU in a 200 series board and such.
