That's a CPU, not a motherboard.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

Which CPU and motherboard do you currently have?

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

How to setup MSI Afterburner OSD | How to make your AMD Radeon GPU more efficient with Radeon Chill | (Probably) Why LMG Merch shipping to the EU is expensive

Oneplus 6 (Early 2023 to present) | HP Envy 15" x360 R7 5700U (Mid 2021 to present) | Steam Deck (Late 2022 to present)

Mid 2023 AlTech Desktop Refresh - AMD R7 5800X (Mid 2023), XFX Radeon RX 6700XT MBA (Mid 2021), MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon (Early 2018), 32GB DDR4-3200 (16GB x2) (Mid 2022

Noctua NH-D15 (Early 2021), Corsair MP510 1.92TB NVMe SSD (Mid 2020), beQuiet Pure Wings 2 140mm x2 & 120mm x1 (Mid 2023),

yes you need a new mother board if you use that CPU now

Not necessarily if it's Bristol Ridge APU.

i didnt think the chipsets where the same? even so hed need to flash the bios which can be tricky

Ryzen 1st gen and Bristol Ridge existed on the same chipset at the same time. Yes, he'd need a BIOS update, but he already has a working CPU to do that if OP indeed has a Bristol Ridge APU and not some other FM1/2/2+ thing.

Yes, you're missing something. AM4 launched with OEMs in 2016 and with just A-series APUs available (Carrizo core, but named Bristol Ridge). Ryzen didn't launch until early 2017 but still uses the same AM4 platform. :)

I have a A78 chipset motherboard

Yeah you need a new board, that's too old to upgrade to anything better.

The a78 chipset is meant for the FM2+ socket , which means you'll need to get a new board for that APU . And unfortunately ryzen only supports ddr4 , meaning you won't be able to use your ddr3 ram

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case
