Does Youtube Support H.265?

I know last year they didn't when I tried to upload it would fail or reject it but now it accepts it. So does it work or is it converting it to VP9 on their servers? If it coverts H.264 anyways then H.265 all the way

Right now Google is holding out for AV1 to be finalised. It should offer all the same (or better) quality/performance for high bitrate and high resolution, whilst being royalty-free (whereas H.265 isn't).

 

So, right now, everything gets converted to VP9 on the backend, but once AV1 is finalised I suspect google will quickly transition over to that.

Alright so I'll just use H.265 as it will look better and has over 1/3rd the file sizes as H.264 cancer

If you use VP9 google won't re-transcode it's native resolution. It'll still be processed for lower bitrates though, but at least the original version you upload won't be modified, so it might end up with you having a better quality video than uploading as h.265 and forcing google to transcode it to vp9 in the back end.

 

Google has a guide to performance/quality settings and as far as I know these are the settings used internally by YouTube when processing files.

There is a chrome extension yes, it forces the site to use H.264 (not H.265, which YouTube doesn't use). H.264 is readily accelerated by almost every modern computing device, even going as far back as original atoms and early intel integrated chips. Until recent hardware, VP9 wasn't hardware accelerated so forcing H.264 would allow for lower resource usage, power consumption etc on older hardware.

 

Currently YouTube prioritises VP9 above everything else, and supports H.264 as a fallback. The extension fools the site into believing VP9 isn't even available as a codec, and so it falls back to using H.264 instead.

Can you proof that? To my knowledge YouTube always transcodes everything.

Sorry, no - it was something I looked into a few years ago after Google moved to VP9 by default, but I can't find that source any more. I haven't heard anything has changed, so take it with a grain of salt.

 

My anecdotal experience is that videos uploaded in VP9 are available to view almost immediately at the uploaded resolution when encoded using the settings in the linked google post, but it might be worth investigating if you upload to YouTube a lot.

YouTube supports uploading h265 videos.

It does not play back at h265, though. All videos are converted first to a baseline 360p MP4 video (h264 video and AAC audio), then converted from there to, I believe AVC video and AAC audio. Depending on viewership or if a video is edited with YouTube's tools, it will then be converted to separate VP9 and Opus tracks.

You can force youtube to encode to vp9 by uploading at a resolution above 1080p. Although it will take a day or two for the vp9 version to be available

Usually that period's around 3-6ish hours from my experiences, but I usually only do 1440p60 videos in that scenario.

I'm not sure if anyone is reading this thread anymore, but I just tested something for myself.

I rendered a clip in H265 and uploaded it to youtube, and it appears to have transcoded it to H264/AVC. Bummer.

H.264 is readily accelerated by almost every modern computing device, even going as far back as original atoms and early intel integrated chips. From everything I've tried, YouTube will only encode a video into VP9 under certain parameters:
1. if that video is "1440p" or higher, frame rate doesn't matter as long as it's 6fps or higher (it either has to be 2560 pixels wide or 1440 pixels tall, or around there depending on if the video is vertical or not)

2. if YouTube determines that the view count warrants it

3. if that video was a stream, it'll automatically convert it to VP9 and Opus once it gets to encoding it

4. if that video is encoded with HDR data and YouTube can actually read it

What used to be 5 was that editing a video in any manner would also trigger it, but that changed in November of last year so that it won't automatically trigger a re-encode to VP9 and Opus unless that video was in that format to begin with

 

It's... strange, but that's kinda how YouTube works. Sometimes the Opus track will trigger without encoding a VP9 track and vice versa. It's bizarre.
