Hi guys,

I have a 8700k, Gtx 1080ti.

Purchasing a new PSU as current on on way out, if I buy a 1000w just for future proof if I ever decided to SLI would 1000w be overkill or not for my current use and the future.

also if you could recommend some PSUs would be great

With an 8700k and 2xGTX 1080Ti you'd be at 595w under synthetic load for those parts alone, you'd likely run into no issues running a 750w PSU even with overclocking.

But even now I don't understand why so many people are so anal about "overkill" when it comes to PSUs, buying that 1000w PSU for your system would be equivalent to murder in some peoples eyes. I say get informed, and then do whatever you want (within reason).

Bear in mind that the higher the maximum output, the less efficient it will be when doing pretty much anything other than gaming.

That is one reason people will think its overkill.

On the other hand, it should run much cooler and quieter than a lower rated one.  So it depends which thing is more important to you, power efficiency or heat and noise.  (although in my experience a good PSU these days will still be relatively quiet even running close to its maximum rated load)

1000W is overkill bro. 850W would be enough. Also i honestly would not suggest you go sli, wait for a new architecture and get the new card. In basically every new architecture (not talking about refresh architecture) it beats out the old 2 high end gpus in sli. And you save a fraction of the money too. But if you wanna experiment then go for it.

850W is typically what I recommend for an SLI i7 and 1080 Ti setup, but SLI is dumb and you shouldn't bother with it. Just get a PSU in your budget now that has the features you want.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Depends on the efficiency rating. If it’s great at half power then sure. I did 5-6 years ago. Used it last year to run 4 1080’s. So keeps you from getting stuff twice. Better than the 850 watt Corsair psu people on here recommended. Louder fan and shitty wire loom that didn’t match the whole thing.

Isnt overkill if it works, Watts isn’t everything. No way in hell I could run a 3770 and a Titan on a “500 watt”, too vague to even consider.

Hi all , thanks for your responses

Ive ditched the SLI idea, I’ve seen a EVGA Supernova 750w G3 really cheap on Amazon at the moment would that be good enough to power the I7 and single 1080ti? Plus the usual fans water cooler etc

Please see above :)

How much is it? If it's the 98 dollars I'm seeing on Amazon, then no, save yourself money and get this if you're ditching SLI.

Buy it from Newegg and after rebates it's literally 48 dollars.
