Can a i5 7400 work properly on a Z motherboard?

Hello ya'll

I know what yall thinking, "what a waste of money" or "what an idiot". But the reason I am asking this because:

1. I found an amazing deal in a computer computer store.

2. Because of the usefullness of upgradability in the future.

I need to know asap.

Yes but it can't overclock because your CPU isn't overclockable.

Z170? With a BIOS update if it doesn't have the Kaby Lake ready BIOS yet.

Z270? Yes.

Any other Z series chipset: no.
