USB 3.0 eGPU?

Hello!

I came across his article published in 2016 which stated that,

The original DIY eGPU solutions were hit and miss in terms of compatibility – they worked with some notebooks, and didn’t work with others. The original eGPUs connected to the notebook by ways of an ExpressCard or other externally accessible mini PCI-e slot; in the last two years, USB 3.0, Thunderbolt, and USB Type-C based connections have surfaced. 

 

Now the article doesn't proceed to elaborate on the claim, but an image provided in it shows what I can infer to be a USB 3.0 eGPU dock with an AMD GPU.

This makes me wonder, was there, or is there any eGPU's connected by a USB 3.0 connection without thunderbolt?

USB would be awful.

I can't imagine apart form some PoC's a real commercial product would be launched.

 

The latency would be too high and the bandwidth would be too low. Even most solutions today that use PCI-E 4x aren't ideal.

I can see your point, although even a PoC would mean that it potentially may become a possibility, even if not a good one.

 

There are some GPU's that run off PCI-E x1, and while they don't perform great, imagine how it would save some older laptops even if you could now connect high resolution displays and play HD content if you have USB 3.0 like say a netbook :D I suppose we will have to wait and see if anything modern arrives on USB 3.0

Such a stupid idea. Look at the card they're using to test it. You'd be better off getting something proper, even if it's another laptop, than trying to get a janky setup like that to work. There are some things that just shouldn't be attempted.

TBH I had the same idea, if bandwidth is an issue maybe one could try to split the data transfer in two and have 2 or 3x 3.0 USB working on it. However the USB 3.0 bandwidth is quite high, it is 625 MB/s so it would be 1.8 GB per minute. The latency is supposed to be 125 microseconds so it shouldnt be an issue, since calculations would only be done once ber frame wich is 16.6 milliseconds with 60FPS. So the time taken to transfer the data would mean an increase in calculation time (compared to 60 FPS) by about 0.78%. The Latency would thereby (ideally) lead to a framedrop by 0.5 FPS. I belive thereby Bandwidth to be the main problem, does anyone know how much bandwidth a gpu needs?
