Hello everyone, I am building my own PC for around $2.2k, and I need some suggestions for which CPU to use.  I have the Asus Strix Z370-F, a 1070 Ti, and 16 GB of Ram.  I don't know what CPU to get, or whether to go with an i5 or an i7.  I originally went with an i5, but people said it was horrible to get a $2k PC with an i5.  I plan on only gaming and using the PC for general use, no 3d rendering, editing, etc.  Thanks for your help!

EDIT: I have a 27 inch 1440p monitor at 144hz.

Do you already have the 1070 Ti, and are you committed to using it? There's no reason why you don't have a 1080 Ti in a $2k build.

As for your original question, a i5-8600k is the perfect CPU to pair with a 1080 Ti in a gaming only system. The extra threads in a 8700k are not necessary at all for gaming.

This is the first time I'm ever going to say this but I think your budget is way too high for your needs.

I am planning on buying monitor, and all peripherals in my build, which obviously increases the price a lot.  To answer your questions, I haven't bought anything yet.  Here is my build if you are interested.  https://pcpartpicker.com/user/WadeM105/saved/dvPbjX

Personally I'd skip the 1070ti and just go directly to 1080. PSU with that budget I suggest you should go with the EVGA or Silverstone, whichever floats your boat. All the rest were cool though, guess your not in to the rgb hype, that's a rare sight (for me) ?. But do take the other suggestions :)

Its not horrible to use an i5 in a $2200 assuming everything else is well balanced and high quality. RAM is expensive and so are GPUs. Make sure you have a 1TB SSD for that price range though. Dont be cheap on the PSU or power protection either. No sense spending all that money to plug it into a junk power strip or use a cheapo PSU.

That being said, id probably get a 1070 or a 1080 and skip both the

1070ti and 1080ti. Pascal is getting quite old now and prices havent dropped in two years. Never smart to buy a full price high end GPU at the end of its product lifecycle.

Unless you need it immediately id wait for Turing GPUs.

I need to buy a monitor as well as all of the peripherals, so I don't think a 1 TB SSD would be plausible.  Thanks for the reply :)

Crucial MX500 1TB is $199 on newegg znd its an excellent prosumer drive. The 500GB would be a very good pick too.

One thing people tend to forget about is multitasking. If you plan on having more programs than just your game open, the 8700k will keep your system in check. If not, you may run into stuttering. That being said, if you oc your chip a lot, you'll probably be kept afloat by the 2 extra cores, granted you're not running OBS and chrome and discord and whatever else at the same time. However, streaming is very much recommended to be paired with an i7. Stream encoding is a heavy task. Not to mention, you can usually get better frequencies on an i7 anyway, which will increase gaming performance.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

I'm going to be coming from an 11 inch 2014 Macbook Air, so I think I will be able to get away with having chrome, discord, and the game open.  I probably won't be worrying too much about stuttering.  Especially since there are only two games that I will be playing that have decently high sys requirements.  Thanks for the reply though!
