Ryzen 3 because it gets you on AM4 so you have a solid upgrade path.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Personally I'd go with Intel, as I've had issues with Ryzen not liking memory. Intel has always taken whatever I've thrown at it.

How long do you plan on having the system before upgrading?

Yes :) forgot about that my b

Then I would go for the i3 because getting an APU is kind of a waste when you already have a dedicated graphics card.

If you're actually building a new PC, the APU can probably hold you over until next gen GPUs are out and you get more for your money.

Unless he has fast memory the apu isnt reaching its full potential, plus if you motherboard doesn't come with the right bios he'll have to ask AMD for a boot-kit.

it's like air vs water-cooling. An Aio has many points of failure.

I may be wrong.

Most of the motherboards should be updated at this point. I would hope someone actually does research before buying, so they know they need fast RAM for the APU.

The infinity fabric design likes fast RAM ya.

Coffee lake also benefits from fast RAM, didn't used to be the case I don't think before DDR4
