I'm trying to decide between Ryzen 7 2700x and the i7 8700k. I'd use the cpu for content creating, gaming, and streaming.

In that case, I'd pick the 2700X with a nice X470 motherboard. :)

Well the Non X has a lower base clock out of the box, If you plan on overclocking Get the non X if you dont really want to overclock get the X, The X costs more, But if its in your budget you can just get the X, Id rather do my own clocks so I went with the non X.

The difference is that the regular one (with no X) is that the X stands for extreme edition which would enable for better overclocking of the CPU.

I would recommend the Ryzen 7 2700X because it handles spread/distributable workloads (like streaming and content creating) better when compared to the Intel 8700K.

Hope this information post was helpful  ?,

on pcpartpicker it says for the non x the max boost clock is 4.1 and for the x it is 4.3, can i still get the same boost clock

It is like playing the lottery, someone was able to get 4.3, My friends chip gets 4.0, I cant get passed 3.9 Stable.

This is incorrect. The X just means it's slightly better. In Ryzen's case, only in clock speed.

Overclocking is dependent on silicon lottery, VRMs, PSU, and quite a bit more. It has more to do with the rest of your system than the CPU itself.

And also, The 8700K definitely overclocks better than the 2700X.

lower TDP, lower idle clocks, a bit lower boost clocks, lower base clocks.

2700 has a 3,2GHz Base, 4.1GHZ Boost, 65W TDP, Wraith Spire LED

2700X has a 3,7GHz Base, 4,3GHz Boost, 105W TDP, Wraith Prism

This is incorrect. The X just means it's slightly better. In Ryzen's case, only in clock speed.

Yes, but AMD does binning and the Ryzen CPUs are used at the upper end of what's possible. That's why they won't overclock well and the higher frequency stuff overclocks (on average) better than the lower ones.

Its kinda like in the olden days when there were 500 and 300MHz Parts. And the 300MHz more often than not weren't able to go to the 500MHz, especially in the Beginning of the production of that silicon.

In Recent years, due to the quasi-monopoly, you haven't seen that much.

Also because we are power limited in some instances.

Sorry, I mixed up the information with Intel's lineup of extreme edition processors. And I was trying to say that there will be a higher change of you getting better performance in total with a 2700X even with a lower margin of overclock than compared to a 2700 with a larger overclock margin. Basically, the X version will be faster to some extent in general than the 2700. These are both different CPUs and the X is slightly better making it able to be considered as being the upper model (unofficially). I apologize for my information being somewhat incorrect and not fully clear of my point. I wonder what the X stands for when it comes to Ryzen's lineup of CPUs.

Hope this information post was helpful  ?,

Even then, X doesn't mean better overclocking. On Intel's end, the X is mostly just marketing and signifies higher end.
