So I plan on selling my old pc for around $400 dollars.  I also have $110 dollars saved up so that leaves me with $510.  Now I want to buy an i7 8700k and get the fractal design celsius s24 but I only have an EVGA GTX 1050ti SC.  I have one friend saying I should just buy the i7 8700k then save up money for a better graphics card (I will have $153.43 after I sell). The other option is that I get an i5 8600k ($239) with the water cooler ($96.57), sell my current CPU (i3 8100 $100 since its used) and sell my current GPU for around $200 since they have gone up in price.  That will leave me enough money to buy a gtx 1070.  I don't know which one I want/should go with.  I'm tempted to go with the first option so I can be good on a CPU for a long time then later buy a better GPU but I'm not a pro at this so I'll let somebody decide.

Are you in a rush? You could wait for next gen GPUs as well as next gen Intel stuff.

I'm gonna assume based on the fact that you have an i3 8100 that your mobo probably isn't Z370, in which case buying unlocked CPUs and expensive coolers doesn't really make sense IMO

I'm just stating that my processor is a coffee lake cpu that's why I'm getting an i7 8700k

Sorry bout that since i see they are both 8th gen processors so doing the cpu would prolly be best instead of buy a new pc right out

Yeah, I don't think that will really be the best option since I would have to sell my entire pc just to get enough money even then it will probably end out being similar.  I'm just going to buy the i7 and the topic. Why build an entirely new system when I can just replace 2-3 parts and be good for awhile.

Wasnt saying sell the full thing. Just replace the parts ypu need in the current system you own it just depends on how fast you want to get your PC upgraded im doing my cpu upgrade over a 5 month time since i have to do ram and the motherboard as well

Get a Ryzen 7/2700(x) instead of those insecure Intel processors.

In the next week there will be another bomb where you can exploit SMT on Intel Processors to get some Data....

Problem is-the stock coolers barely allow the the 8700 to boost due to how bad they are.

Where's the point in that when the OP already has a motherboard that supports the 8700K?:

I'm not one of those people who flipped shit when Intel had a data breach and went to AMD.  Plus I don't feel like wasting more money just to go to AMD.

8700k is usually around $50 extra plus a $30 cooler is a fair bit more than an 8700. Plus since they have a z370 board if OP wanted (though this would be unnecessary with something like a 1070) they could buy a $30 cooler, enable MCT, and have their cpu go up to 4.6 ghz. You'd need a fairly decent cooler for an 8700k to beat that by a significant margin.

EDIT: Actually were you comparing to an 8600k? Now that I think about it assuming op wants to OC an 8600k is a decent option.

This may be a strange question, but what is wrong with i3-8100 and 1050Ti? Any games runs bad? It's really decent 4 core processor and not the best, but nice graphics card. Games should be run smoothly on that configuration, unless you turn on everything on "Ultra". If you really want to speed up, buy graphics card first - that will show you is it works better or do you need new processor (you have plan to buy graphics card anyway, so it's safe option).

I'm talking about the price/performance ratio. If he gets an 8700, he'll still have to get a new cooler.  The stock one is going to have him throttling all the time.  He will have spent several hundred dollars, but not be able to overclock because he stopped $50 short.

It's a waste to go THAT close.  If he gets an 8400 he can keep the stock cooler.  It won't be as fast and he still can't overclock, but he will have saved a lot of money.
