Snap Gaming Platform Coming This Fall

In the past few months, Snap has been lightly dipping its toe into the waters of gaming. Later this year, it’s going to take the plunge.

 

The company is preparing to launch a platform this fall that will let outside developers create games to be played through the Snapchat app, according to two people familiar with the matter. It already has lined up at least one gaming publisher to make a game for the new platform, according to a person familiar with the matter.

 

I don't really use Snapchat all that much but I guess it could be pretty cool. Not really sure how well it'll catch on though. Do people really play games in there messaging app?

If the platform catches on, it would encourage users to spend more time in the Snapchat app and potentially get them viewing more ads in the other parts of the app. Beyond that, a hit game or two could attract new users. And it would more clearly distinguish Snapchat from Instagram, which has copied many of Snapchat’s features, hurting Snapchat’s growth.

 

Or, you know, they could place ads in the games too. I just hope they don't pull a Facebook and play ads while I'm trying to message my friends.

 

I honestly can't imagine this taking off, but who knows. Would you guys use the games in Snapchat?

They are already on a down hill slide so I don't know. Might be fun I guess but the ad thing is hideous

Damn. From the title I thought this was going to be about large developers bringing their games to Snaps in Ubuntu and was like "Shit yeah! Flatpack is better but at least it's on Linux!".

A ridiculous amount of people play 8 Ball Pool in the iMessage app. 

 

Imo this is dumb since they've been trying to cater to young people acting cool, and having games shoved in your face after the terrible UI update is just going to push people away. 

 

Maybe we'll see lots of 8 year olds Snapchat now though
