Need help with Gaming/Video Editing

This is my first PC that I'm building and I want to be sure that I don't screw anything up.

  1. I have a budget of around $3,000 USD, but preferably want to be less than $3,000. If it's a little over $3,000, that's okay, but not too much.
  2.  As the title says, I'll be using it to edit videos, stream, and game. The games that I'm going to play are going to be more high end.
  3. I plan on using two monitors for now, but I might use 3 at some point (but that won't be for a long time)
  4. I am also going to be purchasing a keyboard, mouse, and headset. (Included in part list)

List of parts: (other notes attached at end)

$19.95

Headphones: Kingston - HyperX Cloud II 7.1 Channel Headset

$91.99

Notes: I know that these prices will vary at times, but these are the current prices that I have. I put the list together on pcpartpicker, but I wanted your help because this is just a list that I created and I'm not a big computer expert but I do know some things that helped when putting together the list. One of my concerns revolve around the CPU: people have told me that for things like gaming I should use Ryzen, which I did, but I'm not to familiar with Ryzen, so I don't know if I got a good CPU or not. Another concern is the CPU cooler: not sure if the cooler is good enough or if it is too strong and I should get a different one if anyone has suggestions for a different one. For the thermal compound as it says my friend told me to get one, but I'm honestly not even sure what to use it for. As for the motherboard, is mine good enough or is there a different one that I should use that is maybe cheaper, but just as good, or even if you recommend one that's about the same price and you like the manufacturer better? You don't need to question the RAM amount. I know that 32gb is a lot, but I do have my reasons for wanting that amount. That being said, should I use the RGB sticks or is the extra money for being RGB not worth it? For the video card: should I go with a different type or are the ones that I'm using good enough? As for the case, the one I'm getting is only $35, will that be good enough or should I get a $50-60 case. The last question I have is for the case fan. I didn't realize that you could put 8 case fans on a case and it could still work, but how many do I really need and are the ones I'm getting to strong or not strong enough?

I know I have a lot of questions, but like I said in the beginning, I don't want to screw up the process or the PC itself. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

Save your self some money and get some Arctic MX4 thermal paste instead, also you should get a Ryzen 7 2700 instead, then switch from 2 VEGA 56 to a single GTX 1080 TI, cause a 1080TI out performs the VEGA 56 by itself, and Crossfire isn't really that capability with most games now a days.

What programs are you using for video editing?

Also why crossfire Vega 56s?!? And I'm not sure I understand the use of a smaller TN panel for video editing... Why not a larger, IPS, and perhaps higher res panel?

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

1.Its all good but I strongly suggest you get the 2600 Ryzen to match your other high end parts, your work load and to utilize x470 motherboard's potential if not then best move to the x370 to match your 1600, it'll save you a bit BUT if you plan to move up to a higher cpu sooner or later then x470 it is. Im Using the 2700x on my Asus X470 - F and only a RX580 8gb GPU for 3d creation and both Image and video rendering (architecture stuff).
2.Thermal compound/Thermal Paste, this is VERY important, this is what you place on the CPU lid before attaching your CPU cooler, this helps transfer the heat to your CPU cooler im personally using a Noctua NT-H1 but there are other brands, just do a little search on good and top thermal paste.

3.Your GPU, 1080ti bro or if you wanna do an all amd rig like me get a Vega64(but again im using Rx580 cos poor), skip the crossfire, that stuff isn't that utilized.

Note: Across some of the threads iv'e read here and there, x470 motherboards tend to shut down or resatrt if you are running multiple temp sensing apps, so keep that in mind.

You don't really need to spend that much to get a solid PC

also go for 8 cores if you plan on doing streaming

You're better off with a 4k display for your video editing, and a 1080p 144hz display on the side for gaming

2  GPUs is going to be a waste.

You probably don't need 32GBs of RAM, if you do get that much double check that it will run at it's rated speeds and go for a 2 stick kit.

Get this for the secondary display

Posting the pcpartpicker.com Permalink (above left of build list) or clicking [bb] (above middle of build list) and pasting result mean less typing for you and easier for readers.

For the work described, a more powerful cpu would be better.

The cpu cooler comes with thermal compound. Generally there is no need to get more.

The Dark Rock Pro 4 is going to cover the memory so the RGB lighting will not be that visible. It would also be better to get a 2x16GB memory kit. This will leave two slots free for a non-replacement upgrade should it ever prove necessary.

Non volatile storage is necessary. I.E. you need ssd/hdd.

A good quality case is important.

I'd suggest getting a single, more powerful gpu.

There are better psu choices than the G3.

Consider getting a higher res IPS monitor and using it for both gaming and editing.

Here's what I have come up with for your build except the monitors, and peripherals.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 7 2700 3.2GHz 8-Core Processor  ($289.49 @ OutletPC)

- Since you are streaming and video editing, the Ryzen 7 2700 would be perfect and cheaper so if you wanted to overclock it you can get it up to the same performance as the Ryzen 2700X.
CPU Cooler: Noctua - NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler  ($74.95 @ Amazon)

- Performs the same as the Dark Rock Pro 4, but cheaper.
Thermal Compound: ARCTIC - MX4 4g Thermal Paste  ($4.29 @ SuperBiiz)

- Cheaper, but still works really well.
Motherboard: MSI - X470 GAMING PRO CARBON ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($159.99 @ B&H)

- Has 8 SATA ports, since you are editing videos and when you need more HDD space you can get more.
Memory: G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 Memory  ($360.98 @ Newegg)

- Cheaper RAM but is still pretty fast.
Storage: Samsung - 970 Evo 250GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive  ($107.99 @ Amazon)

- Samsung just makes some good SSDs.

- Fast for a Windows boot drive.
Video Card: EVGA - GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB SC2 Video Card  ($774.98 @ Newegg Business)

- EVGA has great warranty.

- Not the most expensive one.
Case: Phanteks - Enthoo Pro ATX Full Tower Case  ($79.99 @ Newegg)

- Enough space for up to 8 SATA drives.

- Has space for a 360mm on the top.
Power Supply: SeaSonic - FOCUS Plus Gold 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($74.99 @ Newegg)

- Good quality PSU.
Operating System: Microsoft - Windows 10 Pro OEM 64-bit  ($127.88 @ OutletPC)

- Get Pro Windows 10 for some extra user control.
Case Fan: Cooler Master - MasterFan Pro 140 Air Pressure RGB 46.2 CFM  140mm Fan  ($14.99 @ Amazon)
Case Fan: Cooler Master - MasterFan Pro 140 Air Pressure RGB 46.2 CFM  140mm Fan  ($14.99 @ Amazon)

- Slap them on the front and move the 200mm to the top.

24 hours and so many people have already helped me. Thanks so much for your suggestions. Like I said I know a little about computers, but not a lot (yet). Your feedback is much appreciated and I'll let you know what the new part list will be like in a couple of days if any of you would want to leave last minute comments or changes.

1) Do I need a sound card? I know that it makes the sound from games and whatnot better (at least I think it does not entirely sure), but is it necessary since I have separate speakers and headphones.

2) No matter which fan cooler I pick (not going to use liquid cooler) I always get a message like this: The Noctua - NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler may require a separately available mounting adapter to fit the MSI - X470 GAMING PRO CARBON ATX AM4 Motherboard. What do I do in this scenario? Is this when Rainbow Dash said to put the case fans on the front and just move something else to the top (not sure what Rainbow Dash meant by moving the 200mm to the top since I looked through the parts and there was nothing that was 200mm)

There are numerous videos on the net that suggest/claim current motherboard sound is as good as discrete sound cards.

The motherboard has an audio connector block on the rear i/o panel. Speakers are connected there. The case has headphone and microphone connectors on its i/o panel. Those connectors plug into a header on the motherboard.

The NH-D14 is a discontinued product and, as the note says will need an AM4 compatible mounting plate to install it on the cpu. The part is available from Noctua, https://noctua.at/en/nm-am4-mounting-kit.

As mentioned by brob that cooler is now discontinued. If you want Noctua then go with the D15 or D15S. You can use taller ram with the D15S as it is offset.

The newer BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4 should be compatible with AM4 out of the box as it was released after Ryzen. You need to watch out for ram height though.

You don't need extra thermal paste. Just use the stuff that comes with the cooler.

Why the full tower case ? You could go with the Enthoo Pro M or a Fractal Design Meshify etc as they should be cheaper.

No need for a 750W psu. A good 550W would be fine.

Do you need the pro version of windows ? In any case I wouldn't pay $150 for it. Maybe buy from a reputable key site instead.

If you are gaming on the 1080p monitor ? then you don't really need a 1080 ti. A GTX 1070 ti would do fine.

I personally wouldn't bother with a soundcard. You can always add one later if need be, but you should find onboard is good enough.
