Can I overclock my cpu?

I don’t think my cooler is fit for a proper overclock, but I just recently got an i7 8700k and I want to push it to its limit if it is beneficial. I don’t know how much I would benefit from overclocking it, how to overclock it, or whether or not my cooler is appropriate. My full specs are in my signature. Any insight on whether or not I should even consider overclocking, if I can overclock with this cooler, and if not a good air cooler recommendation would be well appreciated. This is a workstation but mostly a gaming rig. Aiming for 1440p 144hz gaming. Gta 5, far cry 5, Skyrim SE with mods, etc.

I'm 99% sure that cooler won't cut it unless you got lucky but still, you should look at a beefier air cooler or AIO if you want to go that route. A good air cooler is the NH-D15 from Noctua.

He could probably get a hundred mhz or so with it.


The Dark Rock Pro 4 from bequiet! and the C7 from Cryorig are also good coolers.

The Dark Rock Pro 4 from bequiet! and the C7 from Cryorig are also good coolers.

So if stock is 3.7ghz It could get up to 3.8 with this cooler?

Probably. I would be careful about temps though, the 8700K can run pretty hot.

Your CPU at stock will reach 4.3GHz on all cores at stock when turbo mode is activated (I know that sounds like a racing game, but it's real). You're more like underclocking, slowing it down here.

How do I enable turbo? Bios?

You can do a moderate OC with the EVO. Some people really underrate the EVO's capability. There's a reason why it's been the budget cooler king.

That said, if you're using a high end CPU, why pair it with a budget cooler? I would pair it with a dual-tower air cooler at least, like this one:

Did you mean Cryorig H7? The C7 looks weak for an 8700K, I didn't even consider it for my 8600K.

5GHz is pretty common for an 8700K. If you can keep it stable under a decently extended stress test, go for it.

I still would upgrade to a dual-tower though.
