Hi guyse,

So first of all I dont want to start a new battlefront in the pc vs console war. I just want your honest opinions on my problem specificlly.

So I situation is that I need a pc for programming and I want something for gaming. I want to be able to program everything I need at home and on way. And I want to be able to game but I'm not interested in long lasting support for many AAA games.

I have 4 options:

1. Pc

If i get a PC I want a high end pc that has very silent components because I need quiet when programming. And also it has to be nothing less than i5/ gtx1070/ ddr4 ram

2. Laptop

I get a high end gaming laptop with almost same specs as pc

3. Console

I get a xbox one x with 500gb

4. Laptop with pc

I compromise with a mid end laptop and a mid end pc

What are your opinions?

Thanks

Ps i should mention that i have a mid end laptop that is good enough for programming but it is not very fast and doesnt support ddr4 ram

Well, you don't say if you also want to do gaming while not at home; if it's okay to only game at home, you could always just keep using the laptop you have for programming and get a proper gaming-desktop for home-use. This would also allow you to stream your games from your desktop to your laptop with Steam's in-home streaming, if you want to e.g. play in another room.

Go with number 1 or 4.

But it depends on what your budget is for both things, You said you wanted a 1070, Pointless to get a 1070 with a i5. Depends on your budget again

"High end PC" Could mean $4,000+

But if you are not going to school, Then its pointless to get a laptop.

Need to know

  • School?
  • Do you really need a "gaming laptop"
  • Budget
  • Weight for a laptop, being lugged around school
  • You said you are a programmer, What kind of programs do you need.

@imKiarax im in university and i need a mid end computer for programming, for that im thinking of using the existing laptop i have.

My actual question referes to your preferences and opinions.

What do you think should be best for my situation?

I know that pcs are supposed to be best for gaming but then they cost much espesially when building from scratch, compared to console which can be much cheaper.

2 and 3 make little sense.

Especially Gaming Laptops. They are just too expensive, too impractical - too loud.

So as a Consolero, I must say that Option 4 is the best for you.

There is no alternative ("Alternativlos"  as a German would say)

If your laptop is fine with programing I'd stick with it and invest more in a decent/better pc rig that meets your needs. Programming generally isn't too demanding and DDR3 is still fine in computers especially for your intended use. If your laptop is having issues with speed switching to a linux distro would be beneficial.

@Majinhoju

I prefer controller.

Laptop I use now has an i7 core that is not that powerful and geforce 960mx (2gb) and 8gb ddr3 ram.

Do you think it would be preferable to look for and ddr4 ram supported laptop?

I guess I'm looking for something wich will allow me to game after work. But my workstation has to be as silent as possible. I had a desktop wich made a lot of noise. And if I were to revert back to desktop it would have to have silent fans and preferable ddr4 supported motherboard

Hmm.. I hardly notice any noise from my Xbox One.  Though I have the first generation, I can't comment on the S or X series.

I'm inclined to believe a gaming laptop would produce more noise as it would need a little extra effor to keep cool.  I don't have much experience with gaming laptops so don't quote me on that.

The desktop might be a wise choice.  Any part that's too noisey can be replaced.  You can get GPUs with quieter fans, you can replace the cpu fan with something better, you can get a cool and quiet style case.

I run a 4670k with the stock fan on a cooler master 690ii case with an asus gtx 1080.  I barely hear it.  I also have it underneath my desk which I find does make a big difference.
