Do I buy?

D3monw3st

Hello everyone,

I’m looking to build my first PC and I’m looking to get a semi high tier graphics card: ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI. Now I see some people talking about nvidias new lineup. Would that be released sometime next month, or in a few months? Would the cost be relatively the same? And lastly given nvidias control of the market, how much of a power jump will they allow?

MFP (My First PC) - Mobo: MSI - X470 GAMING PRO CARBON | CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 X | RAM: Team T-Force Vulcan 16 GB 3000 | STORAGE: Crucial MX500 M.2 500 GB | GPU: GTX 1080 | CASE: Fractal Design Meshify C | FANS: 3 extra Noctura NF-F12 PWM 120mm | PSU: EVGA 750 W Semi-Modular
MFL (My First Laptop) - 15 inch Mac Book Pro w/ Touch Bar
OD (Old Desktop) - 5k iMac 27 inch

I think next gen cards are being released in the Fall. The 1080Ti is still an amazing card. The cost will be high as it is rumoured to have around 16GB of vram, and GDDR6X memory bandwidth, which is insanely fast. If you decide to wait, you can save more and buy it.

First off, the GTX 1080TI isn't exactly 'semi-high tier.' It's the most powerful gaming GPU out there (save for the titan series.) The new Nvidia cards are expected to be released within the next six months, but the huge GPU overflow right now might push that date back. When the new cards come out, they should be between 15 and 30 percent faster than the current ones. For example, the GTX 1080 is about 30% faster than the 980, so we can expect in that ballpark.

Ah okay, and you’re talking about the 1180?

Nobody truly knows, that's the issue with nvidia releases they are whenever they feel like per se.... there's some who believe it's coming at the end of july, others expect it to arrive only next year.

and that's it... nobody can answer you better than just say buy now if you need now xd.

Nobody knows for sure if they'll release TI cards with the normal ones this year. They might, because TI cards are some of the best selling. They will probably only release the 1180 first, and bring the TI version later.

Well, right now I just got rid of my 5k iMac and I’m using my laptop. I guess I can wait, but some people are speculating the cost to be substantially higher?

Oh okay, would the price be inflated when released? Would crypto people still go ham all over it too?

In a forum like this all you get is speculation when you ask about the future nobody knows xd...

People will tell you what they want to belief since there's no negative repercussion at being wrong so there very little you can do until the product is released.

Then again there are some solid assumptions one can make, considering stuff leads us to believe GDDR6 will happen and it's ever so slightly more expensive than even the GDDR5X allied to the fact all "memory" is expensive as ever, and considering inflation and natural price up adjusting nVidia always do yeah.... the cards should be more expensive, now by how much /shrugs.

Waiting depends on your necessity, all in all the experience playing games with a 1080 Ti or a 1180/2080 will be fairly the same since either is top end gaming gear and more than you need to actually enjoy yourself when you get off the ultra quality pointless chase:

Crypto is getting overrun with ASIC mining these days. there are a lot of coin developers that are switching algorithms to try and ward off ASIC mining from their coins called forking, but a forked coin will either live or die depending on how well it's adopted. Concurrency is buried deep in a sort of civil war right now. It's difficult to say whether or not the 11XX cards will be snatched up like pascals have been. Add to it, the most popular GPU mining algo just got dumped on by an ASIC, and i see a lot of small farms trading in their hardware for the ASICs or giving into defeat and selling their farms.

Personally I would have no reservations about buying a 1080ti right now. With the massive overhead that Nvidia just got dumped on their doorstep, i'm skeptical that the 11XX generation will even be released this year. There's simply too much old stock.

But if they are, expect them to be VERY EXPENSIVE. Not just because they are new and latest and greatest... but because they have a lot of ground to make up on late season contracted pascals.

If history is anything to go by the GTX 1180 will perform 5-10% better than a 1080 TI but will likely cost more because of GDDR6 availability. I'd jump on the 1080 Ti now

But even if its only 10 percent faster at least if he waits there will be a price drop.
