Hello community.

I'm a newly IT field technician and I would like to find a really good bag that isn't too huge but accommodates what I need it for:

Hand tools - Service techs know that you don't need a lot of tools. Hell, most jobs can be done with one screwdriver, but I'd like space for a couple of them, a multi-meter, ethernet crimper, and maybe a few other miscellaneous tools I might need.

Laptop. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a netbook instead of a laptop computer. I don't need to do a lot with it, so a netbook will do fine. I would like my bag to have a spot for a netbook.

Paperwork. I would like a bag that has another slot for paperwork, something that can hold a full-size sheet of paper/folders and a receipt book.

These are the requirements I have. Some of my co-workers have multiple bags, for tools and paperwork and it seems like a big hassle. My boss has a bag like I am describing but there's some stuff that I don't like about it.

Basically, I have no idea where to go to look for a bag like this. If you are in this profession, What bag do you use? Do you like it? Where can I get one?

Note: Currently I have a dell backpack, it's really not meeting all my needs.

Sweet, thanks for the list. Only thing else I carry is a roll of velcro.

Thanks for all the good feedback. I ended up ordering a Maxpedition bag, I've always been a fan of there EDC(everyday carry) bags. I didn't know they had tech ones.

I got a single bag right now but I'm switching to 2 separate bags in the next couple of weeks. One, because I'm starting to have back pain from carrying an overweight bag around, two, I look dumb when I got to important meetings with it and three, there's stuff in it that I will use once or twice a year that are nice to have but wouldn't be an issue to go back to my car to get it.

I'll leave the essential in my laptop bag (laptop, iFixit kit, adapters, ethernet\USB\HDMI\VGA\whatever cables, 2.5" HDD, DVD drive, powerbank) and leave the heavier stuff/spare parts (USB cables, cable tester, multi meter, punch tools, routers, switches, keyboards, etc.) in my car trunk since I don't necessarily use it on a daily basis. If I really need it, I'll go back to my car to get it or if I know I'll need it beforehand, I'll grab the second bag before heading out. Who really needs a cable crimper in a business meeting anyway? :P

It really depends on your workload to be honest. If you can't absolutely live without your cable crimper because you are doing telecom installation, you got your answer but you should be considering separating your essential tools from your occasional tools if you do a mix of business\meeting\office\hardware stuff. Dragging a 20-25 pounds bag around is ok but after a couple of years it gets old and as myself you might develop back pain directly due to that after a while ;).

Current Build: SD-DESK-07

I know OP already made his choice but for any future people seeing this thread, gun bags are a great choice. Look for pistol range bags (not rifles lol) and they will have a lot of room, slots for magazines that are perfect for many things, many places to hold tools, loop to velcro or clip stuff to with carabiners and many, many pockets. The more times the word tactical is mentioned somewhere on the product page, the more pockets on top of pockets and loops to clips stuff on it probably has.

This is actually a really great idea! those bags always carry more than it looks like they would too. and are often cheaper than other "tech focused" bags.

sometimes when you're looking for something, the same thing is better and cheaper in a different and less niche market.
